A Prayer for the Joy of the Lord to Fill Our Lives

Prayers For Joy And Laughter

  • Debbie McDaniel
  • 2019May 15

If you’ve ever found yourself facing hard times, one thing you may know to be true: difficult seasons will often seek to drive our joy and happiness far away. But it’s also there, right in the tough places, where we can learn this important truth too, which gives us the perseverance to keep pressing through.

True joy is never dependent on our circumstances, it is from the Lord.

Joy is a choice. It’s not something we can just drum up on our own, or try to put on a fake, happy face, pretending everything is OK when we struggle to just get through. It’s far more than that.

It’s authentic. It’s real. And it’s powerful. The Bible is clear that we need to “choose” to have joy during seasons of difficulty. It reminds us that the “joy of the Lord is our strength.

” (Nehemiah 8:10)

If we’re needing that extra power boost of strength in our day, His joy within us will help us walk in confidence and truth, not held back in fear or worry. The Lord is faithful to help us and there are far greater things still ahead. He gives us the power to live strong. He gives wisdom and discernment to make the right choices. He plants joy deep inside.

He offers the assurance, that no matter what we face, He is with us. And because of those truths, we can recognize who is at the root of every battle with discouragement and defeat. Don’t let the enemy steal your joy by listening to his lies. Step over his traps, focus on the truth of God’s word.

God desires that we live free, filled with His Mighty Spirit, stepping right over every obstacle of the enemy.

We might be facing the toughest of times now, but the truth is, if God has given us breath for today, then He still has great purpose for our lives and promises to bring good through whatever we walk through.

He’s the very reason we can live with joy in the battles, and have peace that is unexplainable to the world.

Let’s choose to look to Him this morning, thankful for the gift of today, asking Him to fill us afresh with His hope and true joy.

A Prayer for the Joy of the Lord:

Dear God,

We confess our need for you, for your Spirit to fill our lives afresh with great joy and strength. The hard times can often leave us feeling dry and defeated. We’ve been weary and burdened. We’ve struggled through for so long, it’s hard to see light at the end of the tunnel anymore.

Would you please give us a glimpse of your goodness again, reminding us that you have never left us and that you have promised to see us through. Thank you for your faithfulness Lord. Forgive us for not trusting you, for buying into the lies of the enemy, and not focusing on what we know to be true from your word.

Breathe your joy and peace into our lives again, cover us in the shadow of your wings, shine the light of your truth over us.

At the start of each day, help us to recognize you above all else. Enlighten the eyes of our heart that we might see you and notice how you're at work through our lives. Give us wisdom to make the best choices, fill us with a desire to seek after you more than anything else.

Please allow your Spirit and power to work mightily within us, through us, again, fresh and new. Thank you that you are greater than anything we may face in our day, or in these difficult seasons.

Thank you that your presence goes with us, and that your joy is never dependent on our circumstances; but it is our true and lasting strength, no matter what we might be up against in this world. We ask that your Spirit lead us, that your peace would guard our hearts and minds in you.

We ask for your grace to cover our lives, and that you would bring us through every dark season with your joy and favor.

We love you Lord. We need you today, and always.

In Jesus' Name,

Amen.

15 Verses on Finding True Joy in the Lord – He promises to give us joy because:

His joy is where our strength is found:

“The joy of the Lord is my strength.” Nehemiah 8:10

Jesus came to give us abundant life:

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” John 10:10

His Spirit fills us with real hope and joy:

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope.” Romans 15:13

Even in our hardest times, He gives us the power to choose joy:

“Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.” James 1:2

God’s blessing, joy, and presence are with us always:

“For you make him most blessed forever; you make him glad with the joy of your presence.” Psalm 21:6

Every day is a gift from His hand:

“This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” Psalm 118:24

No matter the trials we’ve faced, God will again restore laughter and joy:

“He will yet fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with shouting.” Job 8:21

His peace and joy will carry us through:

“For you shall go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and the hills before you shall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” Isaiah 55:12

We can choose to find joy in Him, for He will bring us through every difficulty:

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, Rejoice.” Philippians 4:4

The very fruit of God’s Spirit is joy:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control…” Galatians 5:22-23

The reality of Christ’s love for us and the hope He offers, gives us everlasting joy that the world can’t understand:

“Though you have not seen him, you love him. Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory,” 1 Peter 1:8

God knows how healthy joy is forour lives and He will bring healing to our hearts:

“A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” Proverbs 17:22

He is able to restore our joy again:

Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit.” Psalm 51:12

Even after the darkest times, joy comes back:

“Weeping may tarry for the night, but joy comes with the morning…” Psalm 30:5

He is faithful to see us through seasons of difficulty and pain, and will fill us with shouts of joy:

“He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.” Psalm 126:6

We have a choice every day of who we listen to and what we believe. We have a choice of what we will do with joy. May God help us to live wisely and to allow the light of His powerful joy and strength to shine through our lives in every season.

Bible Verses About Joy, Laughter

Prayers For Joy And Laughter

Home>Benefits Of Laughter>Bible Verses About Joy, Laughter

We believe the following 22 Bible verses about joy have the power to turn your attitude around.

In the words of American theologian Reinhold Niebuhr “Humor is a prelude to faith and laughter is the beginning of prayer.” St. Thomas Aquinas himself said “It is requisite for the relaxation of the mind that we make use, from time to time, of playful deeds and jokes.“

Thank you to pastor Laura Gentry for compiling the following list of Bible verses about joy (and laughter!)

14 Bible Verses about Joy in the Old Testament

The ancient Psalms are filled with expressions of human emotions, some of which are great joy. Many personify the earth to imply that nature itself rejoices. So when we laugh, we are laughing along with the earth!

  1. “A merry heart doeth good a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” — Proverbs 17:22
  2. “Clap your hands, all you nations; shout to God with cries of joy.” – Psaml 47:1
  3. “God has a smile on His face.” — Psalm 42:5
  4. “God, who sits in Heaven, laughs!” — Psalm 2:4
  5. “He that is of a merry heart has a continual feast.” — Proverbs 15:15
  6. “I commend mirth.” — Ecclesiastes 8:15
  7. “I will turn their mourning into joy, I will comfort them and give them gladness for sorrow.” — Jeremiah 31:13
  8. “Let the shield exult and everything in it. Then shall all the trees of the forest sing for joy.” — Psalm 96:12
  9. “Let your heart be merry.” — Judges 19:6
  10. “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth; break into joyous song and sing praises.” — Psalm 98:4
  11. “The pastures of the wilderness overflow, the hills gird themselves wiht joy; The meadows clothe themselves with flocks, the valleys deck themselves with grain, they shout and sing together for joy.” — Psalm 65:12-13
  12. “Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and our tongue with shouts of joy; then it was said among the nations, the Lord has done great things for them.” — Psalm 126:2
  13. “You have turned my mourning into dancing; You have taken off my sackcloth and clothed me with joy.” — Psaml 30:11
  14. “You shall go out in joy, and be led back in peace; the mountains and hills before you shall burst into song, and the trees of the field shall clap their hands.” — Isaiah 55:12

8 Bible Verses About Joy in the New Testament

Notice that the verses about Christ and his coming speak emphatically of joy. This is why many of the Christmas carols have the word “joy” in them: Christ brings joy!

  1. “Although you have not seen Jesus, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and rejoice with an indescribable and glorious joy.” — Peter 1:8
  2. “Blessed are you who weep now, for you shall laugh!” — Luke 6:21
  3. “But in so far as you are sharing Christ’s sufferings, so that you may also be glad and shout for joy when his glory is revealed.” — Peter 4:13
  4. “I have said these things to you,” Jesus said to his disciples, “so that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be complete.” — John 15:11
  5. “The angel said to Mary: You will have joy and gladness and many will rejoice at the birth of your son.” — Luke 1:14
  6. “The angels said to the shepherds: Do not be afraid, for see – I am bringing good news of great joy for all the people.” — Luke 2:10
  7. “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become children, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.” — Matthew 18:3
  8. “When the wise men saw that the star had stopped over the place where the christ child lay, they were overwhelmed with joy.” — Matthew 2:10

Holy Laughter

A few churches in the USA use laughter for inner healing, and it works for them. Read more.

Here is what Rev. John and Pattie Chappell (www.laughcry.org) recommend you do: “When you are feeling discouraged or have hurts that need healing, close your eyes, force yourself to raise your head, and begin praising the Lord in tongues or English for a minute or two.

Then begin saying ‘Hee, hee, ha, ha, ho, ho!’ and repeat it several times. If you cooperate with the Holy Spirit, this will usually release a flow of holy laughter. If that doesn’t work, try saying, ‘Ho, ha, hee, hee’ or ‘ho, ho, hee, hee, ha, ha! This is not being silly.

It is being spiritual! God takes the “foolish things of the world to confound the wise.” These words are holy words, heavily anointed by the Holy Spirit, and amazingly effective.

To the natural mind, this “method” is so absurd, so ridiculous, but it will usually produce holy laughter in anyone. God’s methods bear fruit.”

Laughter Sunday

Recently there has been a liturgical reclamation of what is known as “Laughter Sunday,” “Holy Humor Sunday” or “Lighten Up Sunday”. It is sometimes observed on the fourth Sunday of Lent, which is called “Laetare Sunday,” which comes from the first word of the traditional collect for the day – Rejoice.

It is also sometimes observed during Eastertide. Early Orthodox churches gathered on the Monday after Easter to tell stories, jokes and anecdotes.

To this day in Slavic regions Christians gather the day after Easter for folk dancing and feasting in the churchyard. This was a time of celebrating the big joke that God pulled on Satan.

It is known as Bright Monday, White Monday, and Emmaus Day in various countries. It is also called it ̃Risus Paschalis” – God’s Joke, the Easter Laugh.

Whenever “Laugher Sunday” is celebrated, and by whatever name, it is characterized by joking around, singing, dancing, and merry-making. And it reminds participants that God is a God of laughter as well as of sorrow – much as God is Lord of the valleys as well as the mountain tops (Genesis 21:1-6).

Hymn: “Give to Us Laughter” Words: Walter Farquharson

Tune: Slane (Be Thou My Vision)

3. Even in sorrow and hours of grief, laughter with tears brings us healing relief! God, give us laughter, and God, give us peace, joy of your promise among us increase.

Dear Lord,

I praise you for you are an Amazing Artist.
You are the Master Painter of our World.

You formed majestic mountains, and then you took scoops of brilliant white snow and topped their peaks.

You shaped multi-layered canyons and adorned them with copper-colored hues.

Your exquisite creation is vibrant and full of variety.

Joy and thankfulness rise in me as I meditate on the beauty of your world.

Joy and Laughter

Prayers For Joy And Laughter

Joy and laughter are returning to My house and My people, says the LORD. I Am pouring out and pouring in My Spirit of rejoicing, and it will flow you and affect all that is around you, says the LORD. It will break out to on the left and right side.

It will penetrate and radiate and explode in the midst of you. As I said I would give joy for sorrow, this is the season of great joy. The darkness is defeated and the light of a new day is upon you. I have defeated the depression that has held you back.

I have taken the hopelessness away and permeated you with NEW HOPE in ME, says the LORD. I have given you a new song in the night that is a song of praise and thanksgiving, for a new day is coming. I Am invading you with My Spirit of favor and you will know that your hope is not in vain.

I will do what I promised and bring you the wilderness to possess the land of your promise, says the LORD.

You will stand amazed by My blessings, says the LORD. As you embrace the things that I have prepared for you, you will be in awe of My limitless power that I put on display. You will not look back at the times of testing for the glory that is around you.

Your patience and waiting will be fully rewarded, for I will breakthrough the darkness and give you light. I will loose you from the shackles and liberate you. Joy will erupt from you a volcano and spill from you in an unrestrained way.

For the days of mourning are spent and I will have joy and laughter in My house and in My people, says the LORD.

I AM the One who is keeping you night and day, says the Lord. Even when you sleep, I have a watchful eye over you. You are safe and secure in ME at all times. I do not change. Your care today and tomorrow is not more difficult for me than that of the past. I have lead you continually. I have fed you.

I have always cared for you and you are never my sight. There is nothing that is insignificant about you, and I know every thought that you think. I have numbered every hair of your head and know exactly what color they are and where they are located. Nothing is too difficult for Me and you are no exception.

I can handle not only all the things that pertain to you, but you as well, says the LORD.

Trust in My goodness and mercy for you. Trust that I care for you. Trust in My love. Trust that I desire good things for you and AM not angry with you. I love you unimpeachably and I have forgive every sin that you have committed. All has been cleansed by My blood, and all that you will ever need has been accomplished by My finished work on the cross for you.

I did not leave anything undone, and knew all that you would require before you were even conceived. I prepared for you. Only believe and receive what I have for you without cost. I have paid for it. Just accept My gifts to you. I will lead and guide you with MY eye, and complete you.

Yes, you will not be incomplete, for I Am your builder and Maker, and I do all things well, and this includes you, says the LORD.

There are many, many that I have allowed to go into the fiery trials of affliction, not to destroy them, but to show them My grace and protection and power, says the LORD. For you are not alone. Just as I was with the three Hebrew Children in the fiery furnace, I not only put them on display, but I put Myself on display. I displayed MYSELF to be unsurpassed.

I displayed Myself to be invincible. I displayed Myself to BE the LORD of LORD’s. I put on display that there IS NO POWER or AUTHORITY that can threaten Me or dictate or order Me, says the LORD. I proved for ALL TO SEE that I AM unshakable and unmovable. I will be that in you.

I am putting Myself on display in your live and the unsurpassed power that cannot be defeated. I Am with you in the fire. Others may gawk at you, mock you, scorn you, and even laugh at you. But I laugh at the enemy. I laugh at those who are laughing at you. For I Am on your side to secure you even in the fire.

The flames will not burn you or singe you or destroy you or even touch you, for you will not even have the smell of smoke on you, says the LORD.

I Am the one who has caused you to be unfettered and unbound in the fiery trials. I will not be mocked and I will bring you the furnace of affliction, I will cause those who were laughing to put their hands over their mouths.

I will cause those who were the dictators and the false authorities to be silent. I will bring you out and up, for you will not ever be the same again. I have allowed you to be a spectacle so that I can show forth My glory.

As you have walked with Me in the furnace of affliction and fiery trying of your faith, so shall you walk with Me in the newness that I Am preparing for you. You will be the unshakable, unmovable that will always abound in Me and My work.

For I will promote you and you will see that the glory that is yet to come will be great and the afflictions light in comparison for what I am shifting you into, says the LORD

I Am your defense, says the LORD. As your advocate, I Am always on your side to help you. I Am in complete control and not subject to any person, place or thing. Everything and everyone is subject to ME. I Am the Almighty, and I Am in control. Though things seem to have been spinning control, I Am not in the chaos. I Am not the Author of the storms of your life.

I AM your peace. I Am your place of safety. I AM your covering and hiding place. I Am your shield. I will keep you in every storm of life and give you refuge. Nothing can reach you or invade you in My presence, says the LORD, for My presence cannot be infiltrated by the enemy.

HE has no access of Me, so when you run to Me for safety, you will be untouchable and unreachable, says the LORD.

I have commissioned My angels to surround you, protect you and war over you, says the LORD. They are fierce and undefeatable. They will enforce My kingdom purposes and all that pertains to you.

Trust that you are never vulnerable to the onslaught of the enemy as you commit yourself and all your ways onto Me, says the Lord. I Am always with you and on task to keep you secure and safe.

Trust that I Am able to provision you, and there Is nothing that I cannot and will not do for you. You are never My sight and I Am your caregiver at all times, says the LORD.
