Can We Change God’s Mind with Prayer? A Bible Study

Prayer To Change My Home Situation

The Bible instructs us to pray. In fact, in the New Testament we are told to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). The Christian life is a life that is to be lived in constant communication with God.

We read that the prayer of a righteous person is powerful (James 5:16).

Nevertheless, the question is often asked, “Do my prayers really change God’s mind?” Let us look at this question and try to answer it from the Bible.

God is omniscient

The Bible indicates that God is omniscient. Omniscient means ‘all-knowing’. God knows everything; what was, what is, and what will be. Because of this, we know that God already knows what we need, and even what we are going to pray about.

Therefore, we can conclude that our prayers do not surprise God. It cannot be said that God intended to do thus and such but, as a result of our prayers, He decides to do something different.

[A discussion of God’s foreknowledge, election, and predestination are beyond the scope of this article]

However, God does respond to our prayers. Our interaction with Him affects His actions. He has told us, in His Word, how He will react to certain actions and attitudes of ours; and our prayers reveal what our attitudes are.

When we come to Him in prayer, we are exhibiting our reliance and trust in Him.

And, just as an earthly father wants the best for his children who come to him in dependence, so God relates to His children who come to Him dependently.

The ‘real’ question

Many times, the real question behind the question, “Can we change God’s mind with prayer?” is “Do I, and my prayers, matter to God?” We want to know if God cares about us enough to pay attention to our prayers. Jesus asserts that God loves His children even more than earthly fathers love their children (Matthew 7:10-11). God loves us more than the most loving human father ever has or ever will.

God gives us some conditions that must be met in order for us to be in the right condition to have our prayers answered:

  • our prayers must be grounded in faith in God (Matthew 21:22; Mark 11:24);
  • we must ask in Jesus’ name (John 16:24);
  • we must ask with the right motives (James 4:3);
  • we must be persistent in our dependence on God (Matthew 7:8; Luke 1:10);
  • we must keep His commandments and obey Him (I John 3:22); and
  • our prayers must be in accordance with His will (I John 5:14).

This may seem a lot of things to do and remember in order for God to answer our prayers, but they are all wrapped up in the one commandment Jesus said is above all others, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment” (Matthew 22:37 ESV; cf. Mark 12:30; Luke 10:27). When this is the condition of our heart, all the conditions for answered prayer are met.

When we are truly submitted to Jesus, and His Lordship, our relationship with Him will be such that He hears and answers our prayers as a loving father would answer the requests of his children, whom he loves dearly. David Platt, in his book Follow Me, compares the believer’s submission with the submission of earthly children to their earthly father,

“If my kids were to say me, ‘Dad, this week, we will do whatever you think is best for us,’ how do you think I would respond? Would I make their week miserable? Certainly not. I would honor their trust in me by leading them toward whatever is best for them.

Now I’m not perfect, and I don’t know what’s best for my children 100 percent of the time. But God does. He is a perfect Father, and he makes no mistakes. He desires our good more than we do.

So shouldn’t we gladly surrender our will to his? This is what it means to be a disciple” ( p. 130).

Whose mind is changed?

Most often, it is we who are changed when we come to God in prayer.

Often, when we come to God to ask Him for something, we have already decided what it is that we need. Too often, we pray to God to get Him to see things our way and to join the plan that we have envisioned.

However, quite often, God uses these times to teach us that He knows what is best for us. He will gently change our minds to see things His way, so that we end up participating in His plan.

Most often, it is we who are changed when we come to God in prayer.

The Prayer of Repentance

However, there is a special prayer that completely changes one’s relationship with God.

The Bible tells us clearly that, when anyone prays the prayer of repentance and becomes a follower of Jesus, God relates to that person in a very different way than He did while they were unrepentant sinners in rebellion to Him.

Whereas before they were under God’s wrath and judgment, after they confess their sins and repent, they are forgiven and are no longer under His condemnation (Romans 8:1).

Nevertheless, this does not indicate that God changed His mind; rather, He simply responded just as He promised He would when anyone confesses and repents of their sin and turns to Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Have you confessed your sins and repented of them? It will be the most important prayer you’ve ever prayed.

Conclusion

Since God is omniscient (all-knowing) it cannot be said that, from His point of view, He ever ‘changes His mind’. Nevertheless, we are not omniscient, we know that God loves us, and we are instructed to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

In this way, we are always communicating with God and, as long as we are living as He wants us to, we can be confident that He hears our prayers and acts on them. The most important aspect of our prayer lives is to make sure that, in everything, we are living for Him and His glory.

So, does God change His mind? No…but He does respond to our prayers as a loving father responds to his children’s needs and requests…only better.

This post is sponsored by Mormon.org. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

When I was in high school, one of my friends started making some bad choices, choices she and I both knew were not in line with what we had been taught at church in all of our many years of attending together.

And I resented her for it.

I couldn’t stand to look at her, knowing that she was doing these things, and trying to hide them from me. It infuriated me. I was angry. And hurt.

How could she willingly sin against God?  Was it really worth it to do something so serious? To put her eternal salvation, long-term happiness, and future on the line?

I was beyond frustrated with her. With the situation. I lashed out at her, someone who I used to be so close with. I didn’t understand why she would do such a thing.

And it hurt my own soul in the process.

It became apparent to me over time that I was harboring major negative feelings toward her. Feelings that made me so angry and upset. Feelings I couldn’t shake despite knowing I needed to continue to love her.

But, I just couldn’t get over it. I couldn’t let it go.

Not without help anyway.

As I learned more about the power of prayer at church, I realized that I needed to experience the “change of heart” so often talked about in the scriptures. And I knew I couldn’t do it on my own. My feelings were too strong and personal for me to easily forgive her and let go.

I needed God to take away the burden of these feelings of judgment and hatred and sadness and all of it. I was unable to do it myself.

I hated to admit to God that I was weak, unable to do it myself. I hated, even more, to place this seemingly small, almost petty burden upon the One who had already suffered so much on my behalf, that doing so was unfit to be borne by the King of Kings! In many ways, it felt silly to ask for such a seemingly simple thing to be removed through the amazingness that is the Atonement of Christ.

But, I was desperate to not internally feel so negatively toward someone I loved, someone I needed to love.

Casting My Burden on the Lord

So I decided to do something I had only read about in the scriptures: I asked God to remove this burden from my heart and to change my heart so that I would no longer feel this way, that I would be able to see my friend without anger inside me, without judgment and hurt.

I prayed, cried, and begged God, on my knees, out loud in my bedroom, with the scriptures open on my bed to remove this from my soul and thoughts as it was just too much for me to bear and was negatively affecting my relationship with this person, whom I loved. I didn’t want to feel this way anymore, but the hurt ran deep.

And amazingly as I pleaded with the Lord, I felt it. I felt my burden lighten. I felt the weight lift off my shoulders.

The next day when I interacted with this person again, I could do so without it being tainted by what I knew they had done. I could love them fully and freely again, despite their sin, despite them going against what they had always known to be wrong.

We rebuilt our relationship. We moved forward. And she’s still an extremely important person in my life more than a decade later.

And it was only possible because of the gift of prayer and the power of Jesus Christ’s atonement.

What Invoking Christ’s Atonement in Prayer Taught Me

Acting in faith and praying for His help, down on my knees, was one of the greatest moments of my life and testified to me that prayer does indeed work, that Christ is indeed listening to my prayers, and that God loves me.

I may not always have a strong conviction of prayer in my life, often wondering how to pray and how to make my prayers more meaningful, but this single experience reaffirms to my soul in my moments of doubt that prayer is real, it works, and that God is there listening to me.

Sometimes I meet people who were once me. People who live with anger, malice, resentment or pain because of someone in their life, or toward someone in their life. And they sometimes tell me how they can’t get over it. Or could never forgive them.

But I know that all things are possible through Jesus Christ.

And Jesus Christ can answer our prayers for healing.

He died on a cross for us so that He could carry our burdens and make them light. All we have to do is take His yoke upon us and learn of him.

He invites all to “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest [to your souls].” (Matthew 11:28-29).

Through this first experience of casting my burden on the Lord, I learned so much about the power of prayer, the power of the Atonement, and the love of our Savior Jesus Christ.

I realized that denying Christ’s Atonement to work in my life, denying myself from taking Christ’s yoke upon me so that I could have rest to my soul, for months, was exactly what Satan wanted me to do. He wants us all to be miserable he is. But, Christ begs us to Come unto Him!

I encourage you to cast your burdens upon the feet of the Lord, and plead for rest to your souls.

A Prayer to Change the Spiritual Atmosphere of Our Homes – by Radiant

Prayer To Change My Home Situation

Thank you, Radiant, for sharing these prayers with us!

Ladies, these prayers are designed for you, who are in Christ, to pray out loud with boldness over your life, marriage, home, and family. (If you don’t know if you are in Christ Jesus, please check out this post first):

Jesus,

Thank You that You are here with me and You love me. I receive that You died for me to be transferred the Kingdom of darkness into the Kingdom of Light. You rescued me and adopted me into Your family to love on me now and forever. As a Christian, this is the Truth, no matter how I am feeling today.

I confess that I have allowed lies, negativity, fear, anger, bitterness, unforgiveness, my “rights,” being right, performance, perfectionism, pride, a judging/critical spirit, trying to “fix” others, depression/despair, and/or my relationship ruts to allow hurt, guilt, unrest, and problems into my heart, marriage, home, kids, and relationships. I ask Your forgiveness for that. Forgive me for continuing to be plugged into darkness, Self, and people as my source and identity and as what I look to instead of looking to You and rejecting evil.

Thank You that when I confess my sin to You, You are faithful and just to forgive me my sin and to cleanse me from all. I receive that I am forgiven and free

I want to change this pattern and atmosphere starting today. I believe You can do this as I ask, seek, and knock – but help my unbelief!

In Jesus’ Name, I confess that I am a daughter of the Most High. I am the Bride of Jesus – the Beautiful One who is Faithful and True

You have spiritually already seated me in heavenly places with You. I am held close to Your heart at all times. I am deeply and infinitely loved and pursued by You. I am washed with the all-powerful Blood of Jesus and Your Spirit is in me, always connected to me.

Nothing can separate me from You and Your love – not even me. You have anointed me with a calling and purpose in Your beautiful Kingdom. You have crowned me with Your love and compassion. You put a crown on my head that says “Holy to the Lord.

” I put that crown back on today even though I am not used to wearing it.

In Jesus’ Name – Father, Jesus, and Holy Spirit – I invite You in to every part of my spirit, heart, mind and body. Wash all of the dark, cold, unbelieving, fearful, and hurting places in me with Your love and grace.

I go back in time with You – all the way to when I was conceived – and I receive that You were always there with me, loving me and holding me – even when I abandoned You or accused You of abandoning me. Even in the worst moments of my life – You were still holding me and loving me.

And You have healing for every one of those moments and scars in me.

Jesus, fill all of me up with Your Holy Spirit.

Thank You that He has already been in me since I was saved, but thank You that You love to give us fresh fillings of Your Spirit to heal, set free, and show Your power and love in and through us.

I ask You to reveal anything that is blocking me from hearing Your voice and receiving good things from You in Jesus’ Name. (I confess anything that comes to mind and receive forgiveness).

I invite You into my home, Holy Spirit

Forgive me and my family for grieving You and being filled with, and worshipping other things instead of You. Please fill every room in my home. Cover my home with Your glory and protection and surround it with Your angels who encamp around those who fear You.

I dedicate my home, our rooms, our possessions, our computers and devices, our land, and our vehicles to You for Your kingdom and Your glory.

Wash away anything any of us, or people on this land before us, have done that has caused strife and torment and darkness to feel at home in this place.

Thank You that the husband is the head of the wife, and that Christ is the head of the husband. I declare that Jesus is the head of my husband –and He is leading him into all truth (if my husband is not saved yet, I invite God to draw him to Himself because He already loves Him as His own beloved son).

Give revelation to him of Your love. Open his eyes and ears and heart to You. I ask for the Spirit of wisdom to be on my husband. Send Your love and grace into every hurt place, scar and wound in my husband’s spirit, mind, heart and body. I ask for Your vision of him – what You are calling Him to be and to do.

I receive Your heart and eyes for my husband.

I speak Your love and protection over all of my kids in Jesus’ Name. Call to them and pursue them Jesus

Show them Your goodness – help them taste and see how much You love them. I break generational curses and sins on us from 4 generations back (things fear, abuse, addictions, anger, idols) on both my side and my husband’s side of the family.

I tell every place that hasn’t been lined up with You in all of us to receive the reign of the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. I speak Your rest and peace to rule over this house and each of our hearts and relationships. I receive Your heart and eyes for my children.

I ask to see them how You do – and to see what callings You have on them.

I receive that I am anointed and equipped to be the mom and wife my family needs as I stay close to You and soak up Your wisdom and love

Thank You Jesus that You have given us choices. Today, blessings or curses, life or death is set before us. We have power in our thinking and words and choices to choose Life and blessings. That is what You are so lovingly calling us to choose. We choose You today, Jesus!

Thank You for all of the heavenly assignments that have just been released by Your authority as I have prayed Your heart and will and kingdom into our home. I give all of these loved ones into Your hands and I rest in Your provision for each need. Thank You that You are speaking Light into every darkness.

Hallelujah!

6 Good Prayers for Desperate Situations

Prayer To Change My Home Situation

If you are feeling you are currently left in a hopeless situation, it is best to look to the most Holy Apostle, St. Jude. He was the faithful servant and friend of Jesus. He is universally looked to as the patron of hope. Here is a great list to some prayers for desperate situations.

Prayers #1

Oh glorious apostle St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered thy beloved Master into the hands of His enemies has caused thee to be forgotten by many, but the Church honors and invokes thee universally as the patron of hopeless cases–of things despaired of.

Pray for me who am so miserable; make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded thee of bringing visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of.

Come to my assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations and sufferings, particularly (mention your request), and that I may bless God with thee and all the elect throughout eternity.

I promise thee, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, and I will never cease to honor thee as my special and powerful patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to thee.

Amen.

Prayer #2

O Holy St Jude! Apostle and Martyr, great in virtue and rich in miracles, near kinsman of Jesus Christ, faithful intercessor for all who invoke you, special patron in time of need; to you I have recourse from the depth of my heart, and humbly beg you, to whom God has given such great power, to come to my assistance; help me now in my urgent need and grant my earnest petition. I will never forget thy graces and favors you obtain for me

and I will do my utmost to spread devotion to you.

Amen.

Prayer #3

Most holy apostle, St. Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honors and invokes you universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, I am so helpless and alone.

Make use I implore you, of that particular privilege given to you, to bring visible and speedy help where help is almost despaired of.

Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the consolation and help of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly – (here make your request) that I may praise God with you and all the elect forever.

I promise, O blessed St. Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favor, to always honor you as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to you.

Amen.

Prayer #4

May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be adored, glorified, loved and preserved now and forever.

Sacred Heart of Jesus have mercy on us, Saint Jude worker of Miracles, pray for us, Saint Jude helper and keeper of the hopeless, pray for us.

Thank you Saint Jude

Prayer #5

St.

Jude Thaddeaus, relative of Jesus and Mary, glorious Apostle and Martyr, renowned for thy virtues and miracles, faithful and prompt intercessor for all who honor thee and trust in thee, powerful patron and helper in grievous affliction, I come to thee and entreat thee with all my heart to come to my aid, for thou hast received from God the privilege of assisting with manifest help those who almost despair!

Look down upon me: my life is a life of crosses, my days are full of tribulation, and my paths are strewn with thorns—and scarcely one moment passes but is witness of my tears and sighs. My soul is enveloped in darkness, disquietude, discouragement, mistrust—yes, sometimes even a kind of despair preys upon me.

Divine Providence seems lost to my sight, and faith seems to falter in my heart. Overwhelmed by these thoughts, I see myself surrounded by a dark cloud. Thou canst not forsake me in this sad plight! I will not depart from thee until thou hast heard me. Oh, hasten to my aid! I will thank God for the graces bestowed upon thee, and will propagate thine honor according to my power.

Amen.

Prayer #6

O most holy apostle, Saint Jude, faithful servant and friend of Jesus, the Church honours and invokes thee universally, as the patron of hopeless cases, and of things almost despaired of. Pray for me, who am so miserable. Make use, I implore thee, of that particular privilege accorded to thee, to bring visible and speedy help where help was almost despaired of.

Come to mine assistance in this great need, that I may receive the consolation and succor of Heaven in all my necessities, tribulations, and sufferings, particularly (here make your request) and that I may praise God with thee and all the elect throughout eternity. I promise thee, O blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great favour, to always honour thee as my special and powerful patron, and to gratefully encourage devotion to thee.
