A Time of Refreshing

“I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my Spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring: and they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses” (Isa. 44:3–4, KJV).

The above words describe a time of refreshing. There are no words in the whole Bible that have been oftener in my heart and oftener on my tongue than these. And yet, although God has never left us without some tokens of His presence, He has never fulfilled this promise. I have taken it up today in order that we may consider it more fully and plead it more anxiously with God.

God Alone

Who is the author of a work of grace? It is God: He says, “I will pour.” It is God who begins a work of anxiety in dead souls. If any of you have been awakened, and made to beat upon the breast, it is God, and God alone, who has done it.

It is God who carries on the work—leading awakened persons to Christ. “I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh . . . and whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be delivered” (Joel 2:28, 32) and again in John 16:8: “He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

Ah! If ever we are to see you who are children of God greatly enlarged, your hearts filled with joy, your lips filled with praises—if ever we are to see you growing willows beside the water courses, filled with all the fullness of God—God must pour down His Spirit. He must fulfill His Word; for He is the Alpha and Omega, the Author and Finisher of a work of grace: “I will pour.”

God is as able to do it today as He was at the day of Pentecost, but men are taken up with ministers, and not with God.

As long as you look to ministers, God cannot pour, for you would say it came from man.

Wrestling with God

Learn that we should pray for it. We are often for preaching to awaken others; but we should be more upon praying for it. Prayer is more powerful than preaching. It is prayer that gives preaching all its power.

I observe that some Christians are very ready to censure ministers, and to complain of their preaching—of their coldness, their unfaithfulness. But I do say, where lies the blame of unfaithfulness but in the want of faithful praying? Why, the very hands of Moses would have fallen down, had they not been held up by his faithful people.

Come, then, you wrestlers with God—you who climb Jacob’s ladder, you who wrestle Jacob’s wrestling—strive you with God, that He may fulfill His Word: “I will pour.” Weary sinner! This is Jesus; this is what He wants to do for you: “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty.” Only believe that He is willing and able and it shall be done.

Learn that it must come from His hand. In vain you go to other physicians; you will be nothing better, but rather worse.

Wait on Him; kneel and worship Him, saying: “Lord, help me!”  Oh, long for a time of refreshing, that weary souls may be brought into peace.

If we go on in this everyday way, these burdened souls may perish—may sink uncomforted into the grave. Arise, and plead with God that He may arise and fulfill His word: “I will pour water upon him that is thirsty.”

May It Flood

Learn, Christians, to pray for floods. It is God’s Word—He puts it into your mouth. Oh, do not ask for drops when God offers floods! “Open thy mouth and I will fill it” (Ps. 81:10).
Oh, pray for an outpoured Spirit, ye men of prayer, that there may be many raised up in our day to call Him blessed!

Ah, so would you be, dear Christians, if there were a flood time of the Spirit—a day of Pentecost. Then there would be less care about your business and your workshop—more of prayer and of sweet praises.

There would be more changes in your heart—victory over the world, the devil, and the flesh. You would come out, and be separate. In affliction, you would grow in sweet submission, humility, and meekness.

Seven Simple Tips to Refresh Your Prayer Life

Podcast listener named Nathan writes in to ask about prayer. “Pastor John, I’d to see 2016 become a revival in my prayer life. I want to be honest when I tell people I pray for them.

I’ve read through many theologies of prayer, but I would love to hear any practical tips or methods for praying for other people, specifically for a spouse, children, the lost, leadership, friends, infirm, etc.

Do you have any suggestions to refresh my prayer life?”

Called to Pray

It may seem too obvious to be mentioned, but in my experience there is real motivating power to see my obvious duties stated with simple clarity in the very words of Scripture themselves — instead of just kind of vaguely knowing that I have a duty — to actually see what the Bible says. So let’s start there to help Nathan and ourselves, because all of us share his desire, probably.

Piper: “God tells us to pray, and then gives us lots of examples for how to do it.”

The Bible commends what Nathan is longing for; namely, regular prayer for other people. Specifically, it does so with explicit commands and by numerous examples.

For example, the command of James 5:16: “Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed.” So Nathan should take heart that his desire is exactly in line with what God wants him to do.

Pray. Pray for other people. Pray for one another.

The “one another” in that text implies that the people you are connected with are people you should pray for — not only them, but for sure them. Pray for them. And to do so is to please God.

It is what he tells us to do: To do it pleases him.

And that should just give us a warm, sweet, comforting sense that when we get on our knees and intercede for somebody, God is smiling upon us, because we are doing what he said to do.

Following Others

Then there are the examples of Scripture, not just the commands that tell us what to do, but the examples of Scripture where, for example, Paul is praying for his kinsmen, “Brothers, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for them is that they may be saved” (Romans 10:1). Wow. I can’t tell you how many times that text has encouraged me to see Paul earnestly interceding with his Father for the people he loves to be saved.

So just to hear those words in Scripture can be very encouraging and motivating — empowering for us to press on. He is praying for unbelievers there, but he also prays for believers in Ephesians 1 and Ephesians 3 and Colossians 1 and Philippians 1. Those great prayers of Paul, wow.

I have found these prayers of Paul incredibly valuable both in inspiring me to pray for others this way, but showing me, modeling for me, how to do it. That is what I would encourage us to do is just make those prayers so much a part of us that we can’t help but pray this way for other people.

Inviting Others to Pray

Then there are Paul’s invitations to the readers of his letters to pray for him. “Brothers, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may speed ahead and be honored” (2 Thessalonians 3:1).

“Meditate long and pray through the prayers of Paul in Ephesians 1 and 3, Philippians 1, and Colossians 1.”

Also, Romans 15:30–31, “I appeal to you, brothers, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God on my behalf, that I may be delivered from the unbelievers in Judea, and that my service for Jerusalem may be acceptable.”

For me to hear the greatest man who ever existed, short of Jesus, to have him ask for prayer this way is so life-giving, so warm. It just makes me want to get on my knees and do that for somebody, because Paul, if he needed it — good night! — everybody we know needs prayer that.

So I think that is about the most motivating thing I could say that God tells us to pray and then he gives lots of examples for how to do it. He loves to see us do it, which is probably why Revelation 5:8 describes the prayers in the golden bowls in the hands of the elders as incense before God.

What does incense before God do? Well, it just fills his room with pleasant fragrance. That is what it does. What a beautiful image to get down on your knees with and say: I am right now going to light a sweet smelling lamp or candle, and it is going to fill the room of heaven with a fragrance this afternoon or this morning that God is going to be pleased by.

Seven Simple Prayer Tips

That is the most important thing I could say, but that is not what Nathan asked for. He asked for tips. He asked for suggestions. So here they go. I am just going to bang away. And, really, these don’t have biblical authority, because these are just kind of growing Piper’s experience and that is what saints should do for each other. We should share what we have discovered.

1. Use a List

Use a list, and break it up in categories. We are talking about people now, all right? You probably over time are going to know more people, have more people who ask you to pray. You will have your circle of relationships grow so that one list is hopeless. You have got to break it up into pieces, various groups.

I find that creating a notebook in Evernote on my iPad, I have got a notebook called prayer. And under prayer, I have these different kind of groupings, and you can add people to various lists and then you can decide on when you are going to pray for those people. So use lists.

2. Concentric Circles

Think and pray in concentric circles with the closest relationships near the center and then move out to the more anonymous prayers for groups and ministries and nations. For example, in my Evernote folder, I move from my immediate family at home — that is, the three of us, well, actually two now that Talitha is in college. But it used to be three.

I move out from there to the children and the grandchildren who live away and then out from there to the ministries I am associated with and the people in Bethlehem Baptist Church and desiringGod.org and Bethlehem College & Seminary. I have a whole slew of people that I pray for there.

“Pray in concentric circles, from your closest relationships out to all the nations.” And then I move out to the church planters that I know and the Treasuring Christ Together fellowship. Then I move out to ministries Together for the Gospel and The Gospel Coalition and Training Leaders International and a lot of friends there that are on my list.

Then I move out to my neighborhood and a few people I have written down in the neighborhood, and sometimes, just in my jogging-evangelism that I do in good weather. I will meet people, and they will tell me their name, and I ask them what I can pray for and that goes on one of my lists. So concentric circles is one way I handle the diversity of those lists.

3. Use the Word of God

Pray the word of God over these people. This will keep your prayers from being merely repetitive. Read the word of God first. Meditate on it. Pray in it. Then pray what God shows you from the word for the people that are appointed to be prayed for that day.

4. Compare Your Prayers

Periodically assess your prayers for them by comparing what you pray with what the New Testament prays. I gathered in one place — and I think this is available. We could check, Tony, and make it available. I think it is available at Desiring God.

I gathered into one place all of the things that are prayed for in the New Testament — a list of about 40 different prayers. I use that list not every day, but periodically.

I just run through it and say: Okay, am I neglecting anything important that the New Testament prayed for?

5. General and Specific

Mingle general prayers with specific prayers. A lot of people are skittish about general prayers. I love general prayers. : Hallowed be thy name all over the world. That is a big, general prayer. Specific prayers are also important.

So a specific prayer might be: Grant that Bill would find a job this week. He has been work, Lord. Help him find a job. That is specific. You can just see the answer to that immediately. A general prayer would be: Lord, cause Bill to love you more and to treasure you above all.

That is a lot harder to detect, right? But so crucial that you pray for.

6. Moment of Quiet

Be quiet over the people and see if God brings things to mind that people might need today and then pray those things if God brings anything specific to mind.

7. Look for Answers

And lastly, I would say: Look for answers. Take note of them. Keep some kind of record, maybe in your journal or in another folder: answers.

And what keeps it all fresh and authentic is the way it all flows from the word and goes back to the word, the Scriptures. And I can’t stress enough that we don’t want to become rote. We don’t want to become mechanical and repetitive.

And the best way to do that is to let the word be fresh daily and let the word make your prayers for people fresh daily.

Does God Answer Our Prayers?

Have you ever known someone who really trusts God? When I was an atheist, I had a good friend who prayed often. She would tell me every week about something she was trusting God to take care of.

And every week I would see God do something unusual to answer her prayer.

Do you know how difficult it is for an atheist to observe this week after week? After a while, “coincidence” begins to sound a very weak argument.

So why would God answer my friend's prayers? The biggest reason is that she had a relationship with God. She wanted to follow God. And she actually listened to what he said.

In her mind, God had the right to direct her in life, and she welcomed him doing just that! When she prayed for things, it was a natural part of her relationship with God. She felt very comfortable coming to God with her needs, her concerns, and whatever issues were current in her life.

Furthermore, she was convinced, from what she read in the Bible, that God wanted her to rely on him that.

She pretty much exhibited what this statement from the Bible says, “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.”1 “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer…”2

So, Why Doesn't God Answer Everyone's Prayers?

It may be because they don't have a relationship with God. They may know that God exists, and they might even worship God from time to time. But those who never seem to have their prayers answered probably don't have a relationship with him.

Further, they have never received from God complete forgiveness for their sin. What does that have to do with it you ask? Here is an explanation. “Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God.

Your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear.”3

It's pretty natural to feel that separation from God. When people begin to ask God for something, what usually takes place? They begin with, “God, I really need your help with this problem…” And then there's a pause, followed by a restart… “I realize that I'm not a perfect person, that I actually have no right to ask you for this…

” There's an awareness of personal sin and failure. And the person knows that it's not just them; that God is aware of it too. There's a feeling of, “Who am I kidding?” What they may not know is how they can receive God's forgiveness for all their sin. They might not know that they can come into a relationship with God so that God will hear them.

This is the foundation for God answering your prayer.

How Does Prayer Work?

You must first begin a relationship with God. Here's why. Imagine that a guy named Mike asks the president of Princeton University to co-sign a car loan for him.

If Mike doesn't personally know the president of Princeton, that car loan is not going to happen.

Yet, if the daughter of this president asked her dad to co-sign a car loan for her, it would be no problem. Relationship matters.

With God, when the person is actually a child of God, when the person belongs to God, he knows them and hears their prayers. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. I know my sheep and my sheep know me…my sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me. I give them eternal life and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them my hand.”4

When it comes to God then, do you really know him and does he know you? Do you have a relationship with him that warrants God answering your prayers? Or is God pretty distant, pretty much just a concept in your life? If God is distant, or you're not sure that you know God, here is how you can begin a relationship with him right now: Getting Connected.

Will God Definitely Answer Your Prayer?

For those who do know him and rely on him, Jesus seems to be wildly generous in his offer: “If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you.”5 To “remain” in him and have his words remain in them means they conduct their lives aware of him, relying on him, listening to what he says.

Then they're able to ask him whatever they want. Here is another qualifier: “This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of him.

“6 God answers our prayers according to his will (and according to his wisdom, his love for us, his holiness, etc.).

Where we trip up is assuming we know God's will, because a certain thing makes sense to us! We assume that there is only one right “answer” to a specific prayer, assuming certainly THAT would be God's will. And this is where it gets tough. We live within the limits of time and limits of knowledge.

So, God is not going to do something simply because we determine that it must be his will.

What Does It Take? What is God Inclined to Do?

Pages and pages could be filled about God's intentions toward us. The entire Bible is a description of the kind of relationship God wants us to experience with him and the kind of life he wants to give us. Here are just a few examples:

“…the Lord longs to be gracious to you. He rises to show you compassion. For the Lord is a God of justice.

Blessed are all who wait for [trust] him!”7 Did you catch that? someone rising his chair to come to your help, “He rises to show you compassion.” “As for God, his way is perfect…

He is a shield for all who take refuge in him.”8 “The Lord delights in those who fear [reverence] him, who put their hope in his unfailing love.”9

However, God's greatest display of his love and commitment to you is this: Jesus said, “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends,”10 which is what Jesus did for us. And so, “If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since God did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won't God, who gave us Christ, also give us everything else?”11

What about “Unanswered” Prayer?

Certainly people get sick, even die; financial problems are real, and all sorts of very difficult situations can come up. What then?

God tells us to give our concerns to him. Even as the situation remains dismal, “Cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you.”12 The circumstances may look control, but they aren't. When the whole world seems to be falling apart, God can keep us together. This is when a person can be very grateful that they know God.

“The Lord is near. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

“13 God may provide solutions, resolutions to the problem WAY beyond what you imagined possible. Probably any Christian could list examples this in their own lives. But if the circumstances do not improve, God can still give us his peace in the midst of it.

Jesus said, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”14

A car traveling on the Golden Gate Bridge is fully supported by the integrity of the bridge. It doesn't matter what the driver may be feeling, or thinking about, or discussing with someone in the passenger seat.

What gets the car safely to the other side is the integrity of the bridge, which the driver was willing to trust.

In the same way, God asks us to trust his integrity, his character…his compassion, love, wisdom, righteousness on our behalf. He says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore I have continued my faithfulness to you.”15 “Trust in him at all times, O people. Pour out your heart before him. God is a refuge for us.”16

In Summary

God has offered to answer the prayers of his children (those who have received him into their lives and seek to follow him). He asks us to take any concerns to him in prayer and he will act upon it according to his will.

As we deal with difficulties we are to cast our cares on him and receive from him a peace that defies the circumstances. The basis for our hope and faith is the character of God himself.

The better we know him, the more apt we are to trust him.

12 Simple, Yet Powerful Prayers for Your Church

Jesus is alive, and he is building his church (Matt. 16:18).

Jesus’ church is built upon his life, death, burial, and resurrection. It is through the proclamation of this message—the gospel—that the church will either visibly rise or fall.

The gospel is of first importance for the church (1 Cor. 15:1–11). The Church may have a variety of differences, but there’s one common denominator between them all: We are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.

The gospel renews people who are burdened with sin and discouraged by the struggles of life.

The gospel offers hope for those who have succumbed to the darkness of despair and helplessness.

And the gospel performs the greatest miracle of all:

It introduces people to Jesus who will transform them into new creations in him.

Jesus is inviting you to participate in his work.

One of the most significant ways we are called to participate in God’s work today is to pray for the Church.

We are to…

Pray for the Church.

Pray for our church family.

Pray for the body of Christ in our community and around the world.

Jesus’ church has stood the test of time. It cannot be stopped by force, political pressure, or even political correctness. It has weathered tumultuous years and lived through multiple heretical diseases.

Jesus will continue to build his church until he returns in glory to redeem his bride, and absolutely nothing or no one can stand in his way.  

As you read this post, we encourage you to join us in prayer for the Church.

1 Samuel 2:1-10:

“O Lord, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O Lord, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.”

Romans 15:30-32:

Lord, I need Your stability right now. You are my Rock! Please refresh my Spirit with song, peace, and reassurance. Refresh my mind with Your Word! Refresh my soul within this prayer, Lord! I know You are in control, and that You will make my paths straight, and iron out all of these trials.

Prayer for Anticipation In the Coming Days

I am ready to fall asleep and arise tomorrow morning renewed, but I can’t help but think about the anticipation and anguish I have over life as a whole. But in the midst of my worry, I find myself thinking what Heaven will be .

I imagine beautiful walkways where the saints talk and sing praises to You! I imagine the room that Jesus has prepared for me, as He waits for me to join Him. I am reminded that I need not worry about tomorrow, or what is to come.

For You alone are my protector, and my everything. Thank You for loving me so much, Father!

Prayer for the Strength of a New Day & A New Dawn

Lord, I am weak right now. There is so much going on in my life physically and emotionally that I feel I am at my breaking point! I need Your strength to make it through these times.

Father, I pray that tonight while I sleep You will refresh my mind and strength for tomorrow morning. I pray that You will watch over me as I dream peacefully, and bring pleasant thoughts into my mind.

Today was a wonderful day! Thank You for allowing me to be Your vessel in spreading Your love to others through my actions today; in public, at work, and even in my own home. I was the salt and the light to many people today.

I know there will always be unbelievers, but there are also lost people on very fertile soil. Lord, I pray that the seeds I planted today were on fertile soil. I ask that you water these seeds and reap a bountiful harvest.

7 Daily Prayers to Get You Through The Week

In the Jewish tradition, there is a high importance on daily prayers. These prayers are generally shorter excerpts that one would recite during certain times throughout the day.

For example, when putting on clothing, one would pray: “Blessed is He who clothes the naked.”

The purpose of these short prayers were to make sure that they never forgot the generous God who is the giver of all life and everything good. These tiny snippets of prayers served to help them stay focused on God, and helped them to worship God.

While not as short as the traditional Jewish blessing prayers, these prayers below are meant to be prayed at different times throughout the day. Or, if you desire, you may pray one prayer each day for the week.

Sunday’s Prayer:

I love you God. Thank you for sending salvation through Jesus, which is the name above all names. Let every word that I speak and every thought that I think be pleasing to you. Let my entire life be my act of worship. I dedicate all that I am, and all that I do, to you. Help me to live according to your ways. Living an upright life is how I express my deepest gratitude to you.
