Duas Against the Evil Eye (Al-‘Ayn)

Many Muslims do their best to believe that the evil eye does not exist. Maybe because on a logical level, believing such may translate to believing that there is something more powerful than Allah (swt).

But as the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) has been narrated to have said in a hadith: “The influence of an evil eye is a fact; if anything would precede the destiny it would be the influence of an evil eye” (Muslim).

What is the evil eye?

The evil eye comes from a look of admiration that a person has onto another. When you see something that you in another, even if you are not jealous of them or anything, you may actually inflict them with the evil eye and cause that thing you admired to be destroyed.

For example, a recently married couple who just had a baby may be infected with the evil eye by someone who simply came to visit and loved their home decor, or admired how cute the newborn is. From this admiration of the beauty in their lives, the visitor could infect the couple and their child with the evil eye.

This, of course, does not happen in every instance where someone admires or s something in another. But this is to show the most common ways through which people are afflicted with the evil eye.

Accepting the presence of evil eye does not mean that one disbelieves in Allah (swt); but to protect ourselves from being afflicted by the evil eye, there are some duas that have been given to us from the Qur’an and Sunnah.

Duas against the Evil Eye

These duas are to protect a person against the evil eye. Except for the one that will be mentioned last, they are not the cure for someone who has already been afflicted with the evil eye. Because the later will involve a longer process of making the ruqya dua in an attempt to cure the afflicted.

That said, here are some duas from the Holy Qur’an and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (saw) that serve as a form of protection for us against the evil eye.

1. Praising the goodness in another

We certainly can’t help it, or stay away from admiring people or giving them compliments, just because we do not want to afflict them with the evil eye. Your friend who got the dream job, your younger sister getting married, or that sister at the masjid with the nice abaya.

Good things happen to everyone and it is good to be happy for them, or for yourself. This is why whenever we see something that we or appreciate in a person or in ourselves, we are encouraged to say “maa sha’a Allah”, “Allahumma barik”, “tabarakAllah”, etc.

All of these phrases thank and glorify Allah (swt) as the Creator of that thing which you admire and they ask for the blessings of Allah (swt) on you or the person that you are admiring.

There was an interesting case of a Companion of the Prophet (saw) who took off his clothes to take a shower, and another Companion commented on how beautiful his body was.

The Companion who wanted to take a shower instantly fell ill, and when this matter was referred to the Holy Prophet, he said: “Why does one of you kill his brother? Why did you not say, “May Allah bless you?” (ta baraka-llah) The evil eye is true. Do wudu from it.” (Muwatta Malik)

2. The Mu’auwidat (Suras Falaq, & Nas: Qur’an 113 & 114)

The Messenger of Allah (saw) used to seek protection against the evil of jinn and the evil eyes till Surat Al-Falaq and Surat An-Nas were revealed. After they were revealed, he took to them for seeking Allah’s protection and left everything besides them. (At-Tirmidhi)

The two surahs of Falaq and Nas, along with Suratul Ikhlas (Qur’an 112) are some of our best protections against the evil eye and any evil that can befall a person. The Prophet (SAW) taught his companions to recite these three chapters of the Qur’an thrice every morning and evening, saying that it will suffice us in all aspects of our lives.

A good way to incorporate these duas into our lives is to recite them as soon as we wake up, as part of our early morning routine. As Muslims, we should wake up to thank Allah (SWT) for restoring our souls to us after sleeping, then recite the duas that protect us for the rest of the day

3. The Prayer of Ibraheem (AS) ‏‏

  أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّةِ مِنْ كُلِّ شَيْطَانٍ وَهَامَّةٍ وَمِنْ كُلِّ عَيْنٍ لاَمَّةٍ

“A’udhu bi kalimatil-lahil- tammati, min kulli shaitanin wa hammah, wa min kulli ‘aynin lammah (I seek refuge for you both in the Perfect Words of Allah, from every devil and every poisonous reptile, and from every evil eye)”. (Sunan Ibn Majah)

This was the dua that Prophet Ibraheem (as) used to make for his sons, and also that which Prophet Muhammad (saw) used to make for his grandchildren, Hassan and Hussein.

This is a dua against evil eye especially for children, and for Muslim parents and caregivers, we should endeavour to recite this dua for the children every day even if they are old enough to recite other duas against the evil eye by themselves.

4. The Dua of Jibril (AS)

بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ مِنْ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ يُؤْذِيكَ مِنْ شَرِّ كُلِّ نَفْسٍ أَوْ عَيْنٍ أَوْ حَاسِدٍ اللَّهُ يَشْفِيكَ بِسْمِ اللَّهِ أَرْقِيكَ

“Bismillahi arqika, min kulli shay’in yu’dhika, min sharri kulli nafsin aw ‘aynin aw hasidin. Allahu yashfika, bismillahi arqika (In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you, from everything that is harming you, from the evil of every soul or envious eye, may Allah heal you. In the Name of Allah I perform Ruqyah for you)”. (Sunan Ibn Majah)

This is a prayer that angel Jibril (as) performed on Prophet Muhammad (saw) when he was ill. This shows that this prayer may be more of a healing for the evil eye, and not necessarily a protection against it.

Overall, it is important for us as Muslims to continue to strive to turn to Allah (swt) for protection using only the means that has been taught to us by the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) and the Holy Quran. Because as we believe and affirm with our Shahadah every day, there is no power more supreme than that of Allah (swt).

Here are five short prayers for protection against terrorism.

Pray back Your Word

Oh Great God in heaven, I pray back the words of Your psalmist as a prayer and pray to you, “He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

I will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:1-2), because Lord God, You have said in Your Word that you will cover us under your “pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler” (Psalm 91:4), and so I will “not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday” (Psalm 91:5-6) for You are sovereign over all the nations and nothing can be done contrary to Your will Father, so thank You for Your keeping those of us who are Your own safe, and in the mighty name of Jesus Christ I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Authorities

God, my Father, I pray for the law enforcement personnel who put their life at risk every day. They never know what a day will hold.

Will you protect them from harm and to make them aware of things that might harm those in public? Put your wings over them to protect them as they are the authorities that You have sovereignly placed for our own good (Rom 13:-15), and so thank You for them and for the sacrifices they make, but also the families who live with the possibilities that their family member might be harmed or killed. These days are increasingly dangerous and there seems to be no end in sight, so God, please protect these men and women while they are performing their duty and I include all military personnel who are also often in harm’s way, in their endeavors to protect us and thank you for them as well, and in Jesus’ precious name I pray. Amen.

Prayer for Families Protection

Father God, You alone can see the future and I pray to You Who can look down the corridors of time and see what’s ahead of us, and so I pray to ask Your protection today for my family and those whom I love that You would keep them from harm.

Today, Lord, it seems to be a more dangerous world than ever before, but I know I can trust You with the future and so I commit my trust in You to watch over my family and me so that we can be protected against all harm, including those who want to destroy this nation who are under the evil influences of the wicked.

I ask this in the name above all names, and that is Jesus Christ, the Son of God, in whose name I pray. Amen.

Prayer of Deliverance

Father God, I know that Jesus taught His disciples (and us) to pray for protection from the Evil One (John 17:11,15), and so I pray as the psalmist did, “Deliver me, O Lord, from evil men; preserve me from violent men, who plan evil things in their heart and stir up wars continually” (Psalm 140:1-2) and “Guard me, O Lord, from the hands of the wicked; preserve me from violent men, who have planned to trip up my feet” (Psalm 140:4). I know that You see all that there is to see and I know that Satan or his demons have inspirited terrorists in this world, but I know that You have said, through Jesus, that not one of us will be lost (John 6:39), and that “All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37) and so I thank You for that promise “that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom 8:38-39), and for that, I thank You and pray in Jesus’ glorious name. Amen.

Prayer for Judgment

Great God in heaven, You are the Judge of all the universe and will bring these terrorist into judgment on a day that you have appointed and so thank You for Your righteousness that promises all will be judged in the end (Rom 20:12-15), and so I pray, as the psalmist did, “Grant not, O Lord, the desires of the wicked; do not further their evil plot, or they will be exalted” (Psalm 140:8) and “let them be caught in the schemes that they have devised” (Psalm 10:2b) because “the wicked boasts of the desires of his soul” (Psalm 10:3a) but I boast in You alone God for only You can save those that are dead in their sins (Eph 2:1-2), and that is my prayer, that these terrorist will be brought to a knowledge of the Holy One and I also pray You would keep the Evil One away and thank You for protecting our family and this nation from wicked terrorists who in their thoughts say, “There is no God” (Psalm 10:4b), and this I pray in the strong name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Conclusion

Terrorism is growing today and most of it comes from a false religion that seeks to assimilate the rest of the world and indoctrinate them into their wicked, satanistic religion to do more murdering of the innocent and try to intimidate others in the hopes of making them fearful as well as their goal it to make all the world under one religion, thereby stripping all others of their right to worship God in spirit and in truth (John 4:24) of if they choose not to worship God. It’s only a matter of time before God fulfills Isaiah’s prophecy that “I will punish the world for its evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; I will put an end to the pomp of the arrogant, and lay low the pompous pride of the ruthless” (Isaiah 13:11), so “Woe to the wicked! It shall be ill with him, for what his hands have dealt out shall be done to him” (Isaiah 3:11). If you have never trusted in Christ, God sees you as His enemy, and “it will not be well with the wicked, neither will he prolong his days a shadow, because he does not fear before God” (Eccl 8:13).

5 Powerful Prayers for Protection and Safety

Our world is filled with events and situations that can cause great fear and anxiety. It’s easy to become overwhelmed and live imprisoned by fear.

 We are promised in God’s Word that he is faithful and will protect us (2 Thessalonians 3:3).

 God wants us to let go of fear and to live life to the fullest! (John 10:10) When you are overcome by worry, use these prayers for protection to remember who God is and the protection he has promised you.

1. Prayer for Personal Protection

Father, I come to You today, bowing in my heart, asking for protection from the evil one. Lord, we are assailed moment by moment with images on television, the internet, books and newspapers that leave us vulnerable to sin of every kind. Surround us with Your divine hedge of protection.

Encompass us round about with Your strength and Your might. Let all who take refuge in You be glad, let them ever sing for joy. And may You shelter us, that those who love Your name may exult in You. For it is You who blesses the righteous man, O LORD, You surround him favor as with a shield.

(Psalm 5:11-12)

Lord, I ask that You protect our minds. Father, the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. (Romans 8:6) O God, set our minds on You.

Let us not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds that we may prove what Your will is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.

Strengthen us in the power of Your might, O God. Dress us in Your armor so that we can stand firm against the schemes of the devil. We know that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.(Ephesians 6:10-12)

5. “Priestly Blessings” Prayer from Scripture:

Numbers 6:22-27 is known as the “Priestly Blessing” or sometimes the “Aaronic Benediction.” There are seven requests made in this prayer.

The LORD said to Moses, “Tell Aaron and his sons, 'This is how you are to bless the Israelites. Say to them: “’The LORD bless you and keep you; the LORD make his face shine upon you and be gracious to you; the LORD turn his face toward you and give you peace.”' “So they will put my name on the Israelites, and I will bless them.”

1. The Lord bless you…
The word “bless” means to “provide favor or benefit.” Father, we pray that for our children. You are the Eternal God. Please place Your great kindness and advantage on those we love. May they be approved and favored by You.

3. the LORD make his face shine upon you…
This is a request for God’s presence.Father, as a parent I know that I can’t be with my children all the time, but You can. Just they feel the warmth of the sun shining on them, please allow them to experience Your presence. Thank You for being with them wherever they go.

4. and be gracious to you… 
Grace is God’s undeserved favor. He gives us what we don’t deserve. Father, thank You for Your gift of grace. I pray that gift to be poured out on my children. Following that great gift of salvation, please show them your kindness and love in all the endeavors of their lives.

5. the Lord turn his face toward you… 
Here is a request for God’s fellowship.Father, thank You, that because of their trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit lives in my children. Please walk with them in a powerful way. Enable them to submit to the Spirit’s control day by day and moment by moment.

6. and give you peace. 
The Hebrew word for peace used here is “shalom.” It means “completeness, wholeness, and contentment.” Lord, please calm my children’s fears; soothe their anxious souls. Keep them complete and whole in their thinking, emotions, desires, and actions.

7. So they will put my name on ___________ (the name of your child/children). This is a request of identification. Lord, please place Your holy mark on my children. Set them apart to be used by You.

I love them but You love them more. You love them with an everlasting love. May they represent You well on their earthly journey. And when their journey is completed, welcome them home to live forever with You.

This is the superficial, external side of the question. One should be afraid of losing the connection with the Heavenly Father, a time when there is no hope in his soul for His kindness and support. That is what prayer is for.

To protect against evil spirits, the prayer “From sorcery” is used most often. In any case, it is recommended by priests. Its other name is “Psalm 90”.
