4 Critical Back-to-School Prayers for Our Kids

Prayer For Our School

A new school year is right around the corner for our family, and we are potentially facing some big changes.

you, I want my kids to transition well into a new school year. I want my kids to love learning, to excel in their endeavors, and have an enjoyable year. I want my kids to their teacher and get along well with other kids. I want them to have ease and safety and be A-okay.

I really do want my kids to have an easy life — so much so, that sometimes I forget the importance of allowing my kids to experience natural consequences, the growth that comes through facing life’s struggles, and the satisfaction of success after failure.

The protective Mama in me wants to control my children’s circumstances and grant them a trouble-free year, but far more than that, I desire God’s plans for my children, even if that means unexpected circumstances, unwanted struggles, and new experiences.

I don’t want to control or manipulate, demand or impose. I might think I know what is best for my children, but God is the One who sees their hearts and knows their feelings. He is the One who understands them better than they do themselves and loves them more deeply than I ever can. He has a plan, and He knows what He is doing.

God has a plan for my children — for their good and His glory, and I want to join God in the work HE is doing in my children’s hearts and lives.

Here are 4 critical areas of prayer for our children as they head back to school this fall.

{Parents, if you’re up for the challenge, come join me on my Instagram or  page where the community has committed to praying for our kids every day through the month of September.}

Faith

One of my deepest desires is for God to be working in the hearts of my kids, drawing them to Himself, compelling them by His love, convicting them of wrong, comforting them through struggles, strengthening them in all of life’s varied circumstances. I desire for my children to know and walk in the truth!

For two of my kids, that means that I pray regularly for their salvation first, and then, along with my other two, I pray that my children will know they are loved and live a life of love (Ephesians 5:1-2).

I also pray for my kids to know, love, and obey God’s Word and that they will be sensitive and responsive to the Holy Spirit’s work in their lives.

One of my deepest longings for my children comes from Ephesians 4–

  • Prayer: By the riches of Your glory, Lord, strengthen ______ with power through Your Spirit in her inner being so that You may dwell in her heart through faith. May she continue to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ and may she be rooted and grounded in love, knowing the extravagant dimensions of Your love for her, this love that surpasses understanding, and may______ be filled with all the fullness of You! (Ephesians 4:16-19, 2 Peter 3:18)

Character

Good character comes through training and practice, and we work toward that in our family, but more than having “good” kids or moral human beings, I want my kids to be changed from the inside out! I so desire God’s Spirit to transform the hearts and lives of my kids, making His fruit evident in their lives as they remain in Him.

  • Prayer: This is my prayer, God: that ______’s love will abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight so that he may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ. May ______ not look at the things that man looks at, but open his eyes to see the world through Your eyes and respond to it with Your wisdom and love. May ______ trust in you with all of his heart, not relying on his own understanding but acknowledging You in all his ways and walking the straight paths You have prepared for him. (Philippians 1:9-11, 1 Samuel 16:7, Proverbs 3:5-6)

Relationships

Our relationships with others affect our hearts and our minds — our very lives, in fact. We pray for our children to have healthy relationships, and we must guard carefully the influences to which we submit.

There are times, however, when we have little choice over those who are in authority over us or our children.

In those times, especially, we must pray specifically that our kids will be protected, discerning, and cling  to truth.

  • Prayer: Lord, I pray that ______ will show proper respect to everyone. Strengthen her and help her to love others, fear You, and honor those in authority over her. But, Lord, protect ______, too. Don’t let any teacher or authority figure take her captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. Rather may ______ be discerning and destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ. (1 Peter 2:17, Colossians 2:8, 2 Corinthians 10:5)

Pray with us as we make our children’s friendships a matter of prayer, too!

Safety

We all want our kids to be safe, but even more than I desire physical safety for my children, I long for spiritual safety. I want my kids to be saved by the blood of Jesus and to walk through all of life’s circumstances with Him.

In this world, my kids will have trouble (John 16:33). They will face disappointments and challenges and temptations, and even persecution.

Of course I want my kids to be safe physically, and I do pray regularly for their physical safety, but even more so, I want my kids to be saved and to know the presence, peace and power of our Savior Jesus Christ as they walk through these challenges.

  • Prayer: Thank you, Lord, that you have redeemed ______ and called him by name. He is Yours! When______ passes through the waters — through ups and downs and struggles and suffering, through disappointments and betrayals and bullies and pressures, through insecurities and fears and temptations and heartbreak — be with him! When he passes through the rivers, do not let them sweep over him. When he walks through the fire, do not let him be burned. May ______ take refuge in YOU and be glad. Let him ever sing for joy. Spread your protection over my boy, that he may rejoice in you! (Isaiah 43:1-2, Psalm 5:11)

We have an incredible opportunity to strengthen and support our kids by praying for them! Join us as we pray God’s Word for our kids daily through the month of September.

Praying with you,

Prayer for Principal of School

“Loving God,

On this Monday morning, as the various school leaders prepare to start this new week, I beg that you accept this prayer.

There are principals, assistant principals, and school administrators who are coming to work while surveying the parking lot, the streets, and the local area surrounding their schools with sharp precision.

They are trying urgently to remember if anything looks place, odd, or different.

Lord, there are principals, assistant principals, and school administrators who did not go through curricula materials this weekend, they did not look over budget projections, and they did not prepare reports for their central offices.

On this morning, Dear Lord, these school leaders can only prepare for one thing, they can only contemplate one responsibility, and yet they stand with these weights upon their shoulders today and all of the days of the school year.

Please, Dear Lord, please protect these school leaders.

Give them guidance and wisdom and courage to lead their schools through these days when the safety of their children, their teachers, their staff, and their volunteers are threatened.

Heavenly Father, reassure our school leaders and place within their hearts reminders of your Almighty presence. Oh, God, please hear the prayers of the school leaders serving our schools today.

Dear God, help the parents, the community members, and the decision makers to remember these school leaders in their own prayers.

May we all call upon You to give our school leaders strength and expertise that they may lead all of us into a better, and safer tomorrow. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”

Special Prayer for School

Blessed Lord, we praise You for those schools that desire to educate the children of our day and age in godly principles and sound biblical doctrine and we ask that You would bless and guard them and the many Christian school children that go to their schools and colleges.

Thank You that such institutions of learning are still permitted to function uninterrupted in our country.

Lord, in this increasingly godless society and we ask that others will be allowed to teach and train the children of today in Scriptural truths, knowing that they will be the teachers of tomorrow, in the truth of Your word.

Father, we pray that You would bless the teachers, the children and those that supervise the curriculum that they are using and may it remain true to the truth of your word. Set in authority godly men and women who are prepared and ready to stand for the truth and who themselves are grounded in the word of God.

God, we pray that Your Holy Spirit would lead and guide in all things and that not only the children but also the staff and administrators would grow in grace and in a knowledge of the Lord Jesus so that they are able and ready to stand firm against the plots of the enemy, who would seek to destroy or blot the truth of God.

Guard them Lord, guide and bless we beg You every Christian school, and all those that are connected with everyone. Father, not only in our own country but throughout the world and we pray that each one may produce more spiritual fruits as they continue to proclaim the truth and become a witness of Your grace in the ages to come in Jesus’ Name we pray.

Amen.”

English Prayer for School

Almighty Lord and heavenly Father, we come before You this day as a school to offer our school into Your safe-keeping and that You would lead and guide the world of the teaching and administration staff as well as the children that they teach.

Lord, we pray that this school will be a place of safety and learning. A place of encouragement and excellence, a place that helps those that are vulnerable, that protects the weak and the fatherless and uphold those that are poor and oppressed, and cares for the afflicted and needy.

Father, may this also be a place of adventure and great discovery. A place of learning and creativity and of mutual support and encouragement.

May each pupil that attends our school develop a thirst for knowledge, a respect for one another and a deep love of the truth.

Father, there is nothing more important for our school than that You are kept in your rightful place and we ask that in all things You may be magnified and glorified in all things and this we ask in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Amen.”

Prayer For Our School

How to pray for teachers, students, and schools consistently

I’ve been a student, a teacher, and now a parent of a student, and through it all I’ve learned that everyone involved in the education of school-age children could use our prayers. Whether you are a public school, private school, or homeschool family, a great way to start the school year is to pray for teachers, students, and schools. Our classrooms need our prayers!

If you need a little inspiration for how to pray for teachers, students, and schools, here are three of my favorite ways to do it:

Jericho-style prayer walk around the school

No marching needed, but head out to the school grounds and pray while walking around the school! Go with a list of seven different areas to pray for and and pray for one each time you walk around, or go without a plan and let God lead your prayers. And if you homeschool, you can do this around the perimeter of your home. For inspiration, watch this video of pastor Mark Batterson talk about his prayer walk around Washington D.C., from his video bible study, The Circle Maker.

Pray through the school

My last year of teaching, I had the privilege of walking through the elementary school where I worked along with some parents from the community during the week before school started and pray over each classroom.

We received permission from the administration to do this after work hours and it was amazing. We prayed for each teacher by name and prayed over common areas such as the lunch room, gym, and playground as well. This can be done throughout the home for homeschoolers.

And ask someone to pray for YOU as the teacher in that case, too!

Pray for teachers and students with Scriptures – 5 Bibles verses

There are so many areas where this could be applied, but here are five examples of scriptures for teachers:

The authorities are God’s servants, sent for your good. — Romans 13:4

The student is not above the teacher, nor a servant above his master. — Matthew 10:24

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. — 2 Timothy 3:16

Command and teach these things. — 1 Timothy 4:11

In everything set them an example by doing what is good.In your teaching show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned, so that those who oppose you may be ashamed because they have nothing bad to say about us. — Titus 2:7

Pick out specific scriptures when praying for students, teachers, aides, staff, and administration. Keep them on notecards in the car with you to pray while you wait in line to pick up your kids after school.

Pray for Teachers and Students – Sample Prayer # 1

Lord, I pray the students in this school would show proper respect for the authorities you have placed over them and recognize all authority comes from you. Help them to speak and act in a way that is respectful of all teachers, administrators, and other school staff. (Inspired by Romans 13:1-5)

Pray for Teachers and Students – Sample Prayer # 2

Almighty God, You have given my kids all the talents, abilities, and spiritual gifts they need to follow Your plan for their lives. Lord, help them use those gifts to serve You first and others second, so that Your will is accomplished in their lives.

Lord, fill their lives with trusted teachers and advisers who can lead them toward You and Your promises. Help them turn to you as they learn and grow so they can lead fruitful and prosperous lives. Amen.

 — by Erin MacPherson, excerpted with permission from The Christian Mama’s Guide to the Grade School Years

Pray for Teachers and Students – Sample Prayer # 3

Almighty God, because we love our children, because our hearts yearn for their schools, we cannot remain silent. We will not stop praying until their righteousness shines the dawn, and their salvation blazes a burning torch.

May they be called the Holy People and the People Redeemed by the Lord. And may their schools be known as the Desirable Place and the City No Longer Forsaken (Isaiah 62:1, 12). In Jesus’ name, amen.
