Prayer for Government Leaders Using Scripture

Dear Ruler of the Universe,

We thank you that call us to live together under of the rule of law and under the leadership of governments of every kind.

We look to your word in the Bible that tells us “that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone – for kings and all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.  This is good, and pleases God our Savior.”  (I Timothy 2:1-3 NIV)

We are grateful for this strong word of guidance from a writer in an age when rulers could be good or bad and when the people had little or no say about who ruled or how they ruled.  Therefore, give us the grace to pray for the good and the bad leaders a, those we agree with and those we disagree with,  as your Spirit empowers and leads us.

We stand on your promise that you can guide all those in leadership positions as it says in your Word, “The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord; he directs it a watercourse wherever he pleases.  All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs the heart.  To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.”  (Proverbs 21;1-3 NIV)

And so Father we pray for our government leaders that they will have guidable hearts.  Help them to have a true sense of service.

Fill them with a healthy realization that although they may exercise earthly power, You are ultimately in control of all destiny including theirs.

Fill them with a desire to obey the law of love which transcends all man-made laws.  Grant them a desire to serve justice rather than convenience or personal political advantage.

Surround our government leaders with good advisors.  We pray the grace of Proverbs 19:20 for them, “Listen to advice and accept instruction, and in the end you will be wise.

”   We pray that you will add to their wisdom the gift of patience as it says in Proverbs 19:11 “A man’s wisdom gives him patience; it is his glory to overlook an offense.”  And: “A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered.

”  (Proverbs 17:27 NIV)  Help our leaders to be quick to pray, quick to deliberate and quick to seek advice.  Help them to be slow to speak or act on impulse, anger, pride, greed or desires to strengthen their own power and control.

We pray that our government leaders will establish domestic peace and prevent evil doers from prospering as it says in your Word, “A wise king winnows out the wicked.

”  (Proverbs 20:26 NIV)  “Kings detest wrongdoing, for a throne is established through righteousness.”  (Provers 16:12 NIV)  “Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

”  (Proverbs 14:34 NIV)   Guide our leaders in defending our communities from threats of lawlessness within our borders and from outside of  our borders.

But most of all, give our government leaders a deep and abiding faith in you.  We claim these promises for them today, “Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure.

”  (Proverbs 20:27 NIV)  “When a man’s ways are pleasing to the Lord, he makes even his enemies live at peace with him.

” (Proverbs 16:7)  Give our leaders a strong, trusting relationship with Jesus Christ the Good Shepherd that our leaders might in turn be truly good shepherds of their flock You have entrusted to them.

We pray in the name of Christ the Everlasting King, Amen.

Father, I’m praying for (name them) and other government and community leaders throughout our towns, cities, states, and nation… Save those who are not yet Your own. Give those in authority wisdom in every decision, and help them to think clearly. Grant them discernment and common sense so they’ll be strong and effective leaders. (Titus 3:5; James 1:5; Proverbs 3:21)

Help them to lead and govern with integrity, and may their integrity guide them and keep them on track. (1 Kings 9:4; Proverbs 11:3a; Psalm 78:72; 1 Timothy 2:1–4)

Be merciful to give us leaders who are Spirit-filled and follow Your principles. Direct their steps according to Your Word— for their decisions have a great impact on our lives! (Ephesians 5:18b; Psalm 119:105, 133a)

Be their defender and protector, and keep them always on guard. Help those who are Christians to be strong and courageous, standing firm in their faith and influencing others for Your kingdom.

Encourage and strengthen them, giving them the wisdom they need. Help them to have courage and faith in You, no matter what they’re facing day-to-day.

(Proverbs 23:11; Psalm 41:2a; 1 Corinthians 16:13; Deuteronomy 1:38; 3:28; 2 Chronicles 1:10a; Acts 27:22, 25)

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Praying for Our Government Leaders

Prayer For Our Government Leaders

When we look beyond the picnics, parades, and fireworks that characterize our Independence Day celebrations, we remember that the holiday commemorates our nation’s birth.

This commemoration serves as a reminder to me to pray for our government leaders. This is a wise thing to do because the God we serve is all-powerful and nothing happens outside of His control. Moreover, the Bible instructs us to pray for those in high positions (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

It’s often easy to pray about one or two political issues that really matter to me. There is nothing wrong with this per se, but I always have to be careful not to confuse my personal opinions with Scriptural principles and God’s will.

I’d to think that my opinions always line up with Scripture, but I’m a fallen human being, so this isn’t always the case. I know that you’re fallen, too, so let’s all be careful to avoid praying self-motivated prayers.

Let’s search Scripture and pray, allowing the Holy Spirit to impress God’s will upon us.

When we look beyond specific issues, it becomes evident that there are a number of general things we can pray for our leaders at the national, state, and local levels.

Pray they will have wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” James 1:5

“Blessed is the one who finds wisdom, and the one who gets understanding, for the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels, and nothing you desire can compare with her. Long life is in her right hand; in her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness, and all her paths are peace.” Proverbs 3:13-17

“But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere.” James 3:17

Pray they will have integrity

“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who act faithfully are his delight.” Proverbs 12:22

“To do righteousness and justice is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.” Proverbs 21:3

“A just balance and scales are the Lord’s; all the weights in the bag are his work.” Proverbs 16:11

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men…” Colossians 3:23

Pray they will not be self-seeking

“Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” Philippians 2:3

“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets.” Matthew 7:12

“Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’” Hebrews 13:5

Pray they will have wise advisers

“Without counsel plans fail, but with many advisers they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22

“Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers…” Psalm 1:1

Pray they will be safe

“In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety.” Psalm 4:8

“He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say to the Lord, ‘My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.’ For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence.

He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.

You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.” Psalm 91:1-6

Pray they will have faith in God

“This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:3-4

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” Ephesians 2:8-9

“…because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.” Romans 10:9

Prayers for Our Military Troops

Prayer For Our Government Leaders

It is so important for the faithful to pray much and pray often for our military personnel, who daily put themselves in harm's way for the defense and protection of our nation. The below prayers are taken from the USCCB website and republished here.

It is estimated that 1/4 of the U.S. military is Catholic. Pope St. John Paul II created the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA  to offer pastoral and spiritual care to Catholic servicemen and servicewomen and their families who faithfully serve our nation; they are responsible for the support of 1.8 million men, women, and children worldwide.

Are we supporting our military as much as we could? Here are practical ways to do more for them:

Ways to use these prayers for our troops:

1) Regularly include them in the Prayers of the Faithful at Mass, especially on national holidays.

2) Print them on personalized prayer cards; give them out or place them in conspicuous areas to encourage others to pray for our troops.

3) Have them printed regularly in your parish bulletin.

Other ways you can spiritually support our troops:

1) Have Masses offered for our military and their families, including for the faithful departed who have died in service to our country.

2) Pray a daily rosary for wisdom, strength, and spiritual and physical protection for our military leaders and troops.

3) Offer up your daily sufferings and sacrifices for those who suffer and sacrifice for your protection and freedom.

4) Make sure the names of military personnel from your parish or town are printed in your parish bulletin as a reminder to pray for them by name.

5) If your parish has members who are in active military duty, coordinate an effort to send them care packages. Be sure to include spiritual items such as prayer cards, patron saint medals blessed by your priest, and other encouraging Catholic military gifts.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Safety of Soldiers

Almighty and eternal God, those who take refuge in you will be glad and forever will shout for joy. Protect these soldiers as they discharge their duties. To you be glory and honor for ever and ever. Amen.

For Courage in the time of Battle

Protect our land and its peoples from enemies within and without. Grant an early peace with victory founded upon justice.

Instill in the hearts and minds of men and women everywhere a firm purpose to live forever in peace and good will toward all.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Deceased Veterans

O God, by whose mercy the faithful departed find rest, look kindly on your departed veterans who gave their lives in the service of their country. Grant that through the passion, death, and resurrection of your Son they may share in the joy of your heavenly kingdom and rejoice in you with your saints forever.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Families and friends Left At Home

O God, Protector of all people and nations, protect my family and friends at home from the violence and evil of others. Keep them safe from the weapons of hate and destruction and guard them against the deeds of evildoers. Grant them your protection and care in tranquility and peace.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

On the Eve of Battle

God of power and mercy, maker and love of peace, to know you is to live, and to serve you is to reign. Through the intercession of St. Michael, the archangel, be our protection in battle against all evil. Help me [us] to overcome war and violence and to establish your law of love and justice.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Hope in the Midst of Destruction

God of mercy, you know the secrets of all human hearts, for you know who is just and you forgive the repentant sinner. Hear my prayer in the midst of destruction; give me patience and hope, so that under your protection and with you as my guide, I may one day be reunited with my family and friends in peace, tranquility, and love.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer For Officers In Command

God and Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ, Hear my prayer for these soldiers under my command. Grant that I may bring the spirit of Christ to all my efforts and orders as I exercise my authority over those entrusted to my care. Inform my judgment with your Holy Spirit so that I may make decisions in conformity with your law and for the common good.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Fellow Combatants

Lord God, Remember Christ your Son who is peace itself and who has washed away our hatred with His blood. Because you love all men and women, look with mercy on all who are engaged in battle. Banish the violence and evil within all combatants so that one day, we may all deserve to be called your sons and your daughters.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Innocent Victims of War

Lord God, your own Son was delivered into the hands of the wicked, yet he prayed for his persecutors and overcame hatred with the blood of the Cross. Relive the sufferings of the innocent victims of war; grant them peace of mind, healing of body, and a renewed faith in your protection and care.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Refugees and Victims of War

Lord God, no one is a stranger to you and no one is ever far from your loving care.

In your kindness, watch over refugees and victims of war, those separated from their loved ones, young people who are lost, and those who have left home or who have run away from home.

Bring them back safely to the place where they long to be and help us always to show your kindness to strangers and to all in need.

Grant this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

7 Good Bible Verses For Our Government and Politicians To Reflect On

Prayer For Our Government Leaders

Here are 7 Bible verses that governmental employees and politicians can reflect on.

First Timothy 2:1-2 “First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and dignified in every way.”

We may not feel it or we may not believe that they are doing the best that they can but we are commanded to pray for those who are in “high positions” and that most certainly means praying for governmental leaders and politicians. As bad as they may seem or as corrupt as we might believe they are, this does not relieve us of our responsibility to pray for those who are over us.

Romans 13:1 “Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.”

We are subjects of the government of the land. This means that we are to be under their authority and this means that we should obey those who rule over us, no matter what we feel about them. God has established those in positions of authority as it pleases him and so we ought always to “be subject to the governing authorities.”

Daniel 2:21 “He changes times and seasons; he removes kings and sets up kings; he gives wisdom to the wise and knowledge to those who have understanding.”

We might think that we have control over who runs the government but actually God is the One Who plucks up and puts down leaders. He is the One Who removes and sets up kings and kingdoms, including those who have authority over us. Their day of justice will come so we must trust God to execute His righteousness in time and not take it into our own hands.

Romans 13:7 “Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”

Those governmental employees with the IRS deserve the same respect as those in the judicial system, in congress, and in the White House. We should give them the honor to which they are due. If respect, then give respect, if honor, then give honor, and if taxes are due, pay them and by doing so, we are living in obedience to God.

Psalm 75:7 “but it is God who executes judgment, putting down one and lifting up another.”

God does use men and women to help establish governmental powers but in the end, God is the One Who will execute the final judgment on all who have been given much responsibility. It might even be us. He is the One Who sets up kingdoms and tears them down, He exalts one and brings others down…always according to His will.

Proverbs 8:15-15 “By me kings reign and rulers issue decrees that are just; by me princes govern, and nobles—all who rule on earth.”

Whoever is in power in a nation, it is by no accident. Even issued decrees are under God’s rule. It is by God that princes govern, nobles rule, king’s reign, and issues are decreed. Our job is to simply obey.

Romans 13:4 “For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword in vain. For he is the servant of God, an avenger who carries out God’s wrath on the wrongdoer.”

If you pay your taxes, obey the laws, and give respect to those in authority, you have nothing at all to worry about but if you do not, then be afraid says Paul. God’s servants don’t bear the sword (authority) for nothing but are God’s agents doing His bidding.

Conclusion

I hope these verses have helped you see that the governmental authorities are decreed by God for our own good and not for our harm and even though it is hard to trust any politician or even government employees, we are commanded to show them respect and live a life of obedience that is pleasing to Him because “whoever resists the authorities resists what God has appointed, and those who resist will incur judgment” (Rom 13:2).

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour.”

Amen.

Prayer #8

God of ages, in your sight nations rise and fall, and pass through times of peril. Now when our land is troubled, be near to judge and save. May leaders be led by your wisdom; may they search your will and see it clearly. If we have turned from your way, help us to reverse our ways and repent. Give us your light and your truth to guide us; through Jesus Christ,

who is Lord of this world, and our Savior. Amen.

Prayer #10

We look to You and to You, only, Lord. Help us make wise decisions that move our country in the right direction. Help us to do our part in praying and in staying with what we know is right according to the truth of Your Word.

Teach us to make our actions count and our words matter, and line them both up to Your sense of rightness, not ours. Guide us with Your eye; grip us with Your strong arm; teach us what we need to know to make our lives—and our nation—count for you.

We pray for our leaders, but we ask You to make us both leaders and followers: leading in the way of Truth, and following those who honor You.

In the precious and powerful name of Jesus,
Amen

Prayer #11

Heavenly Father, we praise and thank You that You are the most High God Who rules in the kingdom of men and that You set up leaders in their various offices and remove them by Your mighty will.

Father we lift up the leaders of our country and all those that You have set up in places of authority to rule and govern our nation, both political and religious.. and we pray that they would rule our land and the many institutions with wisdom and integrity.

We pray that each one would carry out their various responsibilities with honesty and for the benefit of the nation. Clothe each one with righteousness and justice – and we pray that all selfish ambitions would be laid aside and that Your plans and purposes are fulfillled for the well-being of all citizens.

May Your ways be know in our country and Your name be lifted up in the corridors of power – and guide our country we pray into the ways of peace, justice and truth – this we ask in Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer #12

Loving Father at a time when there is increasing unrest and growing fear of what is coming on the earth, we bring before You the leaders of the various nations of the world and pray that in Your grace and mercy You would intervene and help those that are suffering so greatly in so many nations.

We pray that world leaders would seek after wisdom and justice, mercy and truth, freedom, godly grace and a desire to know You more and more. We pray that those that are deliberately opposing Your will and pushing an anti-God agenda would be removed from their office and that their plans and purposes would be exposed, and become ineffective.

We grieve for those that are living in war-torn countries of where there is much blood-shed, corruption and unrest in their governments and pray that in Your pity and grace You would intervene – by removing corrupt leaders and replacing them with those of integrity.

But Lord we also know that until the Lord Jesus returns as Prince of Pease to set up His millennial kingdom.. the current unrest, wars and rumours of wars, corruption and distress will continue – and so we pray that You would be merciful to those that are suffering.. due to the increasingly unrest and fear that is sweeping the nations of the world today – this we ask in Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer #13

Prayer Heavenly Father we acknowledge that You are a gracious and merciful God but we also know that you are also holy and righteous and cannot and will not look upon sin.

Be merciful we pray to the nations whose leaders have turned their backs on You and the Lord Jesus Christ, Whom You sent to die for their sins – be merciful we pray to all those in positions of power who are seeking to implement a humanistic and anti-god agenda. Be merciful we pray to those men and women in high places that are seeking to remove all vestiges of Christianity and the One true God from their nation’s laws and rules – and protect all those that are believers in the Lord Jesus we pray.

Look down in pity on those that are under such leadership and are required to live their lives under a godless regime – and we pray that in Your loving-kindness and great mercy You would deliver them from the tyrannous rule that that has replaced the truths of God.

Have mercy on the leaders who have deliberately rejected Your path of truth and justice and bring them to saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ we pray, in Jesus name, Amen.
