Prayer For Help With My Smoking Addiction

I Spent a Month Trying to Quit Smoking With Alternative Therapies

Prayer For Help With My Smoking Addiction

Keen to harness the power of pessimism? In dire need of new friends, but have no clue how to make them as a full-grown adult? Read the rest of the VICE Guide to Self Improvement here.

This month I'll have been smoking for nine years. My experiences trying to ditch cigs—with Nicabate, Champix, and a few cold turkey attempts—have always ended with me feeling sick and giving up. For a long time it's seemed I'm condemned to addiction.

That's because quitting is really hard. Although most smokers plan to quit, the numbers suggest few actually pull it off: One study by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare found that while 77 percent of smokers intended to change their behaviour, only 19 percent managed to quit longer than a month.

After looking at my track record (basically just a history of me quitting quitting) I decided it was time to try something different. The internet offered me thousands of alternative solutions, but only four seemed even remotely plausible: the aversion method, acupuncture, natural remedies, and hypnotherapy.

So I lunged my last dart, told my dad I was quitting for good, and gave myself a month to try and make it stick. Every week I'd try a different alternative remedy until I found something that worked. Because something had to, right?

Week One: Making Myself Hate Cigarettes By Chain Smoking

Aversion therapy meant smoking three cigarettes in a row every time I smoked, totalling at least 25 a day. Image by Mitch Pinney.

The idea behind aversion therapy is simple: Link a negative response to a habit you're trying to break and, in turn, you'll never want to do it again. Research has shown that aversion therapy's effectiveness is unreliable. However, the idea of chain smoking three cigarettes at a time, at least 25 darts a day, sounded it might just do the trick.

All I can say is that smoking this much fucking sucked. I'm aware that's the point of aversion therapy, but still, it was a disgusting and ineffective way to quit. By the end of the week, I genuinely felt poisoned—mind and body.

I couldn't concentrate or communicate. I smelled terrible and constantly felt sick. Cigarettes did became a chore, which should've meant success. But my cravings and triggers still existed, and the only technique I had to deal with them was smoking more.

My sense is that even if you were to try to aversion approach for longer than a week, you wouldn't actually quit. You'd just become a heavier smoker.

The verdict: 1/10

I was told acupuncture would help relieve the stress of quitting. Image by Emilie Kilvington.

Week Two: Distracting Myself From Cigarettes With Needles

Acupuncture works on the belief that certain points of the body are related to certain feelings. So putting a needle in these spots should relieve some pressures and negative emotions. There's research to suggest it can even reduce your desire to smoke.

I booked in for three hour-long sessions of acupuncture with Renee Knott, specially designed to stop nicotine cravings. We started each one by measuring my pulse, before inserting needles in my ears, wrist, forehead and feet—all, Renee told me, are major spots for addiction and stress. The session would finish with meditation and a massage.

The meditation and massage were actually the most relaxing part. Image by Emilie Kilvington.

For me, acupuncture felt effective because I was replacing cigarettes with an entirely new experience. It wasn't much about the actual needles, but rather the whole process of relaxing.

I found looking forward to my next session, or trying Renee's techniques that made me feel I didn't need to smoke as much, especially for stress. Although I still smoked during this week, I felt guilty every time I did, and ended up cutting down from 15 to about five a day.

The verdict: 7/10

My natural remedies: herbal cigarettes, lime juice, black pepper oil, St John's wort, and passionflower tea. Image by Mitch Pinney.

Week Three: Trying to Suppress My Cravings By Downing “Natural Remedies”

While it all might seem a bit airy-fairy, there's scientific evidence to suggest some herbs and oils operate in the same way as Nicabate, meaning they suppress your nicotine cravings and replace cigarettes with something less harmful.

Thai researchers have reported that drinking fresh lime juice can be nearly as effective as medication, while a US study found black pepper essential oil and passionflower tea can reduce nicotine cravings. St John's wort can help with stress and anxiety—a common side effect from quitting. And herbal cigarettes are just something you can smoke that aren't addictive.

Despite being hopeful, I found none of these stopped my cravings nearly as much as medication had in the past. Maybe getting teased by co-workers for sniffing black pepper oil put me off, but most ly it just doesn't work. Either way, realistically you should just get your medicine from a doctor instead of putting it all through the Coles self-checkout as “carrots.”

Nope. Image by Mitch Pinney.

Also herbal cigarettes taste shit.

The verdict: 3/10

Week Four: Trying To Hypnotise Myself A Bad Habit

Hypnotherapy was completely different to what I expected. Before my session with hypnotherapist Laura Masi, I went through a week-long “pre-therapy” which involved meditating for 20 minutes every day. I also had to write down every time I smoked and why. At the time, I remember feeling this was going to be bullshit.

A podcast Laura got me to listen to every day before my hypnotherapy session. Image by author

During the actual hypnosis session, Laura put me under and told me a bunch of nice things: I have the power to quit, I'm not a slave to my addiction etc. She also made me verbalise why I smoke and what “parts of me” let that happen.

Essentially, hypnotherapy is just deep meditation with a very supportive friend encouraging you to quit. And this isn't a bad thing. I left the session feeling I didn't need to smoke, and if I did have a cheeky dart, I'd feel guilty. Admittedly, that's exactly what I did less than two hours later but, oddly enough, I never felt hypnotherapy was a failure.

In my previous attempts to quit, relapsing felt inevitable. But after this I had this newfound sense of confidence. I recall Laura saying when I was under, “Whether you quit today, or in the future—you will quit.

” I'm aware it all sounds tacky, but that's where I see the real merit in hypnotherapy. Un other therapies, where you are reliant on a substance to quit, with hypnotherapy the responsibility is on you.

The verdict: 8/10

Quitting smoking is no mean feat, especially when you've been doing it for nearly half your life. It'd be easy to dismiss these therapies as failures, but I think that would be unfair. What I gained was a lesson in dedication.

The reality is you can quit in the way that works for you, but it's going to take more than lime juice or needles. You actually need the confidence to quit, and to keep trying if you fail. The reality is that right now I just don't want to quit enough.

I'm aware that many wait their whole lives for a bolt of inspiration, only to find it in the form of an inoperable stage IV tumour.

But that's the problem with smoking: it's just so comforting that the threat of cancer makes me want to calm down with a dart.

It's hard to say when I'll quit, but this has shown me that I can and someday will. My history might show otherwise, but I'm more prepared and confident than in the past. It's just going to take a few more attempts and less Champion Ruby.

Best Home Remedies to Quit Smoking

Prayer For Help With My Smoking Addiction

As more people become aware of the dangers tobacco products present to human health, the demand for smoking cessation aids continues to increase at a rapid pace. While many pharmaceutical remedies are effective, they can become rather expensive for those who are living on a budget.

Luckily there are some remedies which may be done at home for little cost, often using items you already have, or ones you can find easily at the store.

Water

Part of the reason that nicotine is so addictive and so hard to get rid of is because it permeates your body as a toxin. It gets into your system and is very hard to get out. But water is a natural detoxifier. It will purge your system better than just about anything. And your body needs water to counteract many of the harmful effects of tobacco and nicotine.

The water helps you heal and it enables you recover from smoking while you are trying to quit. As you abandon your regular smoking habits your body will heal on its own and start to detoxify, but water gives it an extra boost, and it speeds up the process, helping you fight your addictions that much more.

Ginger

As your try to quit smoking, you will ly start to feel nauseous. This is one of the most common symptoms people experience when they try to quit. To combat that nausea, you can take ginger, either in tablets, capsules or as a tea. It will calm your stomach and help you overcome the nausea. And it might keep you from being tempted to go back to the cigarettes for relief.

Vitamins

As you fight the toxins in your body, you may feel you need some help.

Multivitamins, especially those containing Vitamins A, C, and E are excellent for repairing your body and giving it the essential nutrients it needs to expel toxins.

What you are looking for as you combat your addiction is something that can ease the withdrawal symptoms and make you better able to handle your cravings. Vitamins reenergize your system and give you the strength to fight back.

Ginseng

If you want to combat the cravings specifically, then ginseng may be the key. You can use about a spoonful of ginseng powder and add it to your juices, cereal, oatmeal or soup. It is best to take it during the morning. That way it can fight your cravings all day. If you find that it is not enough for your cravings, then you can increase your dosage or take it more frequently.

You may already be taking ginseng if you take a multivitamin, so look at what your vitamins have to see if you really need to take ginseng in addition.

Grape Juice

The biggest part of conquering your addiction and the symptoms of withdrawal is to get the toxins your body. Nicotine is one of those toxins, and once it is out, you should not experience any more cravings or withdrawal symptoms.

Increasing your water intake is a great way to do so, but you can fight even harder by drinking grape juice daily. The acids in the juice are natural detoxifiers and they will rejuvenate your system and cleanse out the toxins faster.

It is the toxins that are causing you to feel cravings and that keep your energy levels down. By using detoxifiers you can boost your energy levels and start to feel better much faster.

Aromatherapy

Though essential oils are probably not going to help you kick the smoking habit, they can help you beat the stress that could end up putting a cigarette back into your hands. Oils from lavender, tea tree and rosemary have been shown to increase mood scores and reduced stress in recent studies.

Fruits and Vegetables

The fiber in fruit and vegetables will make you feel full and for longer. Sometimes hunger can be mistaken for the urge to smoke. Cutting down hunger could lead to fewer cravings for a cigarette.
Beans and grains are a great way to add a lot of filling fiber to your diet. Fruit bananas and apples are very good to help keep you feeling full.

While the concept of detoxifying your body using herbs and tonics is debatable, the body does do a good job of detoxifying itself. There are things you can do to help this process move along more swiftly.

Drinking enough water is one of the best ways to help your body detoxify itself. Your body is made mostly of water, and most people do not drink nearly enough. When you give up cigarettes, make sure you are drinking the recommended 8 glasses of water per day. You can also drink half your bodyweight in ounces per day as well, if that helps you remember more easily.

For instance, if someone weighed 200 pounds, they would need to drink 100 ounces of water each day.
Limit your caffeine consumption as it can end up creating a toxicity that combined with nicotine withdrawals makes quitting even harder.
Since metabolism slows when somebody quits smoking, caffeine consumption during this period leads to a rise in caffeine levels.

The nicotine in tobacco products is what makes them so addicting. When you give up smoking cold turkey, you may suffer from some major withdrawal symptoms ranging from nausea to irritability to jitters.

One way to ensure you don’t give in to the urge, is to distract yourself from your cravings. This may mean something different for different people.

For instance, you might engage in one of your favorite hobbies so as to not think about smoking. Some find success with chewing gum whenever they feel the urge to smoke, according to WebMD.

In some cases the action of chewing on something, such as gum or food, eases the cravings.

Some smokers find that all they need is a little incentive to stop smoking. WebMD mentions a smoker whose family member offered money for each day she didn’t smoke a cigarette. For others, just thinking about what could be purchased using money formerly spent on cigarettes is enough to encourage them to quit.

Make a list of some things you have wanted to purchase but haven’t. Determine how long you will have to go without smoking to save the money you need to make your purchase. Another incentive is taking a trip. Determine how many packs of cigarettes it will cost to take this trip, and begin right away.

Having something to look forward to and having a more concrete goal just might make the process that much easier.

There are some herbal remedies which may help offset some withdrawal symptoms related to quitting nicotine. According to Home Remedy Shop, ginger may help alleviate nausea withdrawal symptoms, while oatmeal could help the body detoxify itself faster. Studies have also shown that some herbs, such as St. John’s Wort, may also lessen the urge to smoke.

Friend and Enemy

Oh,what a friend I have in you my dear Copenhagen; you've always been very closeto my heart.

Thrugood times and the bad, you've never abandoned me. I've entirely depended onyou thru the most horrific times of my life. You truly have been my bestfriend. You have always sought me and wrapped your arms around me. You haveplanted seeds of desire for you; how great are thou.

Ihave protected you from wicked people who have talked poorly of you. I have hiddenyou and justified our close nit relationship. How dare someone talk badly aboutmy best friend….you can't be the sin everyone is saying. You must love me….and never would you mean to bring harm to me. You've been a great and powerfulforce in my life.

Mydearest friend Copenhagen,my newest friend, Jesus Christ,

has convicted myheart about you.

Hehas shown me the darkness of our relationship. The lies and deceit that youhave taught me has trickled into other parts of my life.

Youhave attacked my integrity, my faith, and my direction toward the Lord.

Youhave warped my mind and now I must rewire my thinking. You have also attackedmy lovely wife with lies and deception.

You'rethe same snake that deceived Eve in the Holy Garden. You are the Prince of theEarth, but no longer the reigning source of my heart, mind, and soul. In thename of Jesus Christ, I release you into the hands of the Father; may his willbe done.

I plead the blood of Jesus Christ of Nazareth over my wife, family, and me. I demand you to leave with your lies and deception immediately! I'm anew being in Christ, and I firmly stand on this from this day forward.

Amen

Quitting smoking cigarettes by spiritual practice | SSRF English

Prayer For Help With My Smoking Addiction

Omprakash, a resident of Dubai, UAE was addicted to smoking cigarettes for 11 years despite innumerable efforts to quit smoking.

In a workshop conducted by the Spiritual Science Research Foundation (SSRF), he came to know about the spiritual root cause of addiction as well as the spiritual healing remedies for it.

He immediately took up the spiritual healing remedy of chanting and overcame his addiction within 7 days. This article is a telephonic interview with him on 2nd October 2006.

SSRF publishes these case studies with the intention of providing some direction to our readers with regard to problems that manifest at a physical or psychological level, but which can have their root cause in the spiritual dimension.

When the root cause of a problem is spiritual in nature we have observed that the inclusion of spiritual healing remedies generally gives the best results. SSRF advises continuation of conventional medical treatment along with spiritual healing remedies for the treatment of physical and psychiatric illnesses.

Readers are advised to take up any spiritual healing remedy at their own discretion.

Introduction

Omprakash (34) is originally from India. He is a Business Development Manager in Dubai. Even though he is not an overtly religious person, he believes in a higher divine power.

He was not doing any chanting or ritualistic worship of God prior to attending the SSRF workshop. His wife had to literally force him to attend any form of ritualistic worship of God.

His father was also addicted to smoking.

Interview with Mr. Omprakash

Interviewer: Hello Omprakash, thank you for giving us this interview. Before we start the interview, congratulations on successfully giving up smoking.

Omprakash: (smiles) Thanks

Interviewer: Can you give us a brief history about your smoking addiction?
Omprakash: The smoking habit started in 1995 when I was 23 years old. After coming to Dubai, I saw girls smoking at a party, which was quite unusual from a traditional Indian perspective.

I thought to myself, if girls can smoke freely then why do I hesitate to indulge in it? Initially it was all for the fun of it, but gradually it became a compulsive habit. Now it is almost 11 years since I began smoking. Initially I used to smoke 2 to 3 cigarettes a day.

Later it increased to 10 to 15 cigarettes a day.

Interviewer: Did you ever try to give up your addiction?
Omprakash: A number of times.

I would take some measures to stop, such as keeping coins in my pocket instead of currency notes so that I would be able to buy only loose cigarettes and not a packet or I would buy only loose cigarettes and not the packet etc.

, but this way at the most I could reduce to 6 to 8 cigarettes a day. However this phenomenon would go on for a week and again I would be back to my routine of smoking 10 to 15 cigarettes a day.

If at all I did quit smoking entirely, the maximum I could stay away from it was for 7 days and then I would be back at it.

Earlier when I would be smoking I would feel fatigued, stressed out and tired but when I would quit smoking I would be worse off as i would get a bad cough and cold. When I would start again, I would feel better. At times, I used to even drink every week but somehow I was able to stay away from that habit taking root through sheer will power.

Interviewer: So how did you overcome smoking?
Omprakash: It all came about after attending an SSRF lecture. I came to know about the lecture on ‘Spiritual research on ghosts’ held on 15th Sep 2006 in Dubai through a family friend who had seen the advertisement poster put up in the temple.

Then my friend coaxed me to attend the lecture. I felt it was a divine intervention that a person me actually landed up for that workshop. During the course of the lecture, I came to know that most addictions are due to demonic possession and one of the spiritual healing remedies is chanting the Name of God as per one’s religion of birth.

I decided to try it at once.

Interviewer: What made you follow the advice given by SSRF?
Omprakash: I just felt that my presence at the lecture was clearly due to divine intervention. I also d the scientific explanations given by SSRF in the lecture. Hence when I understood that the cause of my problem is possession, I decided to give the remedy a try.

From that day onwards I started chanting 2 malas (2 x 108 times) of ‘Om Namaha Shivaaya’, which is the chant of my family deity. I used the help of my fingers to keep a count of my chanting.

Since that very day, whenever I got an urge to smoke and I held a cigarette in my hand, I felt as if it is a devil and I threw it down at once. This phenomenon kept on repeating.

Now it is almost 15 days that I have stayed away from smoking. I don’t even get the urge to smoke.

The Spiritual science behind the cure: Only if the cause of the addiction is purely due to a spiritual factor being affected or possessed by a ghost (demon, devil, negative energy etc.) can it go away this fast. The increase in the subtle basic sattva component brought about by chanting acts in two ways:

  • By creating a protective sheath around the person.
  • By removing the black covering created by ghosts around the person.

Ghosts are high in the subtle basic tama component and therefore feel stifled, intimidated and distressed with the increase of the subtle basic sattva component in the person that they are possessing.

Refer to the article on ‘What are the three subtle basic components of sattva, raja and tama?’

On 22nd September 06, we performed the yearly rituals (Shraaddha rituals) for departed ancestors. My departed father was a smoker too.

I was told that as he was a smoker, I need to smoke after we finished the Shraaddha lunch to satisfy his craving. But I was not able to even hold the cigarette in my hand and felt dropping it a hot coal.

My wife was surprised to see this, as she is aware of my addiction to smoking.

Interviewer: But why did you share this so late with us, i.e. after 15 days?
Omprakash: Because I wanted to be sure that it is not my past efforts where I would start smoking again within 7 days. This time I wanted to give it more time and so I shared this spiritual experience with you during SSRF’s next lecture on ‘Destiny’.

Interviewer: Are you continuing chanting now that your smoking habit has gone?
Omprakash: Now I chant even more. I do not keep a count but I chant while driving, walking and working. Hence I am not sure of the number of chants.

Interviewer: Have you observed any other change in yourself in any other aspect?
Omprakash: Being a business development manager, I constantly suffer from stress related to my job but nowadays I never think about it. I just chant and that has reduced some stress. I am even experiencing some peace.

Interviewer: Do your family members notice any changes in you?
Omprakash: Yes, they have seen a change in me but they are unable to believe it and so they just dismiss it.

Interviewer: Did you share this freedom from addiction with your other family members (not immediate family), friends, colleagues etc.?
Omprakash: Yes I did share my experience with a few. They all say that the Name of God coming from my mouth sounds odd and so they make fun of me.

Interviewer: Did you tell any other smoker or drinker about this? What was your experience?
Omprakash: Yes, I tried to share it with my friends with habits but they all make fun of me. I am waiting for a complete change in myself so that they will see it is for keeps and then believe in it completely.

Interviewer: Would you mind if we publish your experience on our website?
Omprakash: Of course not. Why should I mind? I only pray that if there are others me suffering from addictions, then they be helped by reading my case study.

Editor’s note:We have been following up with Omprakash regarding his addiction since this interview was taken. As of 2nd May 2007, Omprakash has been able to quit smoking of cigarettes for over 7 months and has become addiction free. He has not felt the need to go back to it. Through out this period he has been persistent with the chanting of his family deity’s Name.

The power of prayer in addiction recovery

Prayer For Help With My Smoking Addiction

“Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”  – Matthew 11:28-30

Struggling with a substance abuse addiction takes its toll not only physically and emotionally, but spiritually as well.

That’s why Christian drug and alcohol treatment centers strongly believe in treating the person as a whole; mind, body and spirit.

How does prayer work in recovery? The power of prayer in recovery builds hope and provides the motivation and strength to fight the good fight against addiction.

Finding or restoring a relationship with God during rehab provides a powerful Helper while on the journey to life-long recovery. Strengthening a relationship with God through group and personal Bible studies, and fellowship with others through prayer groups, provides an unexplainable sense of peace and boundless hope. In its essence, faith in recovery needs to be accompanied by actions.

Prayer Heals

“Jesus stopped and called them. ‘What do you want me to do for you?’ he asked. ‘Lord,’ they answered, ‘we want our sight.’ Jesus had compassion on them and touched their eyes. Immediately they received their sight and followed him.”  -Matthew 20:32-34

1-888-882-1456

The healing power of prayer is a proven fact that scientific and medical research equally support.  There are documented studies that prayer has healed many serious diseases much to the puzzlement of medical practitioners. The power of prayer is a mighty God-given gift that can heal addiction too.

No one is without weakness; no one. How we react to that weakness, however, makes all the difference in the world.  Turning to drugs or alcohol is the easy way out and not the reaction God desires.

God offers unlimited strength to those who turn to Him in prayer; releasing control and allowing Him to take charge of that weakness – that addiction – will extinguish its power and hold on an addict’s life.

There are many more benefits gained through genuine faith and prayer:

  • You will never be alone in the battle
  • Relief from fear and anxiety
  • Balance of mind, body and spirit
  • Experiencing pure joy which increases the effectiveness of treatment during rehab
  • Inspiration to do the work necessary to achieve a new life free of addiction
  • Greater mental focus
  • Diminished stress levels
  • Strength against addiction triggers
  • Reduced rate of relapse
  • An increase of dopamine levels in the brain generating the serenity once manufactured by drug use
  • Absence of depression
  • A 24/7 Helper to guide you to making the right choices while accepting what cannot be changed

How to Pray

“I lift up my eyes to the hills—where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, the Maker of heaven and earth.”  – Psalm 121:1-2

Don’t let your loved one suffer. 1-888-882-1456

Think of prayer as a conversation between you and God. Talk to Him as if you were talking with a friend. Prayer does not have to be a script; filled with ‘thee’ and ‘thou.’ God wants to hear from you – personally.

A good guideline is to:

  1. Start with some praise, tell Him how you care for Him and trust in Him alone
  2. Thank Him for the blessings in your life; big and small
  3. Ask Him for healing from your addiction and share the desires of your heart with Him
  4. Ask for forgiveness
  5. Ask for strength and protection against the evil powers of addiction

The 12-Step Recovery and Prayer

“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference” – Reinhold Niebuhr

A.A. and N.A. believe deeply in utilizing the power of prayer for recovery and healing. A countless number of addicts have achieved successful long-term recovery with the strength gained through praying to God.

Each of the twelve steps is complemented by a prayer which can be incorporated into personal prayer time. Reciting the Prayer of Serenity during A.A. meetings is customary and a good prayer to find strength on a daily basis during life-long recovery (what the Serenity Prayer means).

Believe in the Power of Prayer for Recovery

“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.” –John 10:10

Drugs and alcohol are not your friends. They are the enemy – the thief – that is intent on destroying lives and families. God promises unconditional love, protection from your enemies, a Helper to guide you and strength to carry you through. All you have to do is believe.
