Isn’t it true that you spend more time offering prayers for help from God than in any other type of prayer? I know that is the case with me, as much as I do not to admit it. I am so thankful that we have a Heavenly Father who is full of mercy and grace and we can count on the fact that He will always answer our prayers for help.

We can cry out to Him in our time of need and He will rescue us. Though sometimes it seems He will never answer or does not hear, God is still on the throne and available and willing to listen to our prayers for help. Ask for help and then be still and know that He is God and will act in His time.

Praying for your children? Most moms would agree that comes easy. But praying for your husband? Who does that regularly? In our busy lives, husbands sometimes get left behind.

We find the time to pray for our children, and may even participate in mothers’ prayer groups, but praying for our husbands is a different matter. This can make it a struggle when we wake up to how important it is to pray for our spouse.

So here are six short and effective prayers inspired by the letters of Saint Paul that you can try right away, without waiting for Father’s Day.

1. So my husband knows the love of God

“So that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God” (Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians 3: 17-19).

“Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord” (Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Ephesians 6: 4).

Prayer: Holy Spirit, fill the heart of my husband with Your peace, so that through him he may show your love to our children. Give him the patience and the necessary wisdom to raise our children in purity and in faith. Help him to guide our children towards the right path and to encourage them to stay close to You. Amen

4. For the well-being of our family

“And my God will meet all your needs according to the riches of his glory in Christ Jesus” (Letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Philippians 4: 19).

Prayer: Lord, You know what we truly need. I ask You to give my husband the grace to use our resources with wisdom, to be ‘poor in spirit’ (Matthew 5: 3) and to be generous towards those in need. Amen.

5. That he should be the man You called him to be

“Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. Do everything in love” (First letter of Saint Paul to the Corinthians 16: 13-14).

Prayer: Lord, I entrust to You all the decisions of my husband, his projects, his worries, and his entire being. Help him to be strong in Your Love and anchored in faith. Give him the strength to be the man that You’ve called him to be: courageous, happy, and generous. Help him to grow in faith, hope, and charity. Amen.

6. That my husband acts with wisdom and discernment

“I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better.

I recently returned from a trip to Jamaica, where I spent several days lounging by the pool and gazing at the ocean. A family of five swooped in and took over the deck area next to us.

The kids weren’t a problem – I enjoyed their energy! But the husband wasn’t just difficult, he was abusive. He called his wife names under his breath and spoke to her in a condescending, demeaning, patronizing manner.

His whole attitude and tone of voice was sarcastic, mean, and rude. His wife seemed helpless to defend herself. She was passive, quiet, submissive, and helpless.

What do you do when you live with a difficult husband – a man you wish you never married? I’ll share a few ideas here…but the truth is that you need to look within yourself for the answers. The solution to your marriage problems isn’t here on the internet. It’s in you, in that still small voice that is telling you how to cope with a man who doesn’t respect or honor you, much less love you.

Allow yourself to dream of freedom

You can’t change your husband, but you can start planning a new life. Even if you think there’s no chance in the world this new life is a possibility for you, you can allow yourself to dream. Consider seeking help – with or without your husband

The wife by the pool in Jamaica didn’t defend herself or snap at her husband – her response was to passively treat him kindly, gently, and as though he was actually being nice to her. That was her way of surviving her difficult marriage, of getting through the minutes, hours, and days with a jerk. Living passively with a difficult husband was easier for her than confronting him.

Difficult men aren’t easy to confront. That’s why I suggest talking to a counselor or trusted friend about how to cope with a hard marriage.

Taking some sort of action may help you move forward, even if it’s simply confiding in a friend. If you haven’t told anyone that you’re living in a difficult marriage, feel free to comment below.

You’ll find that the more you talk about it, the easier it’ll get to open up.

Stay connected to people and activities that build you up

When was the last time you talked to your best friend, sister, mom, or favorite coworker? Who do you wish you could re-connect with? What activities make you feel happy, refreshed, energetic, and fulfilled? What about counseling – have you talked to a professional about your marriage? Do you exercise, eat healthy foods, get enough sleep, and love yourself? These may sound useless or meaningless things to do, but they are so important. The healthier you are, the better your life will be.

If you stay connected to people who love and support you, you’re more ly to make healthy decisions for your life. When your husband treats you badly you begin to think you deserve it, that you’re worthless. This is another lie that will drive you into despair. You can break free, but you need to start taking steps – no matter how difficult it is.

Tell the truth. Talk about your marriage with someone. Be honest with yourself, too. Do you really think your husband will change? Can you see yourself spending the rest of your life with a man who treats you badly?

You’ll face financial struggles, social embarrassment, and problems with your children and other family members. But is this really how you want to spend the rest of your life? A week or so ago I put together a massive post with well over a hundred bible verses about money and talked about how we need to make sure that we always put God first in our lives before money – and everything else.

We can easily allow money to become our master, and God can quickly move to the background if we’re not careful.

Joshua 1:9 Be strong and courageous; do not be frightened or dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

God Gives Us A Spirit Of Strength And Power

Through faith in Christ we are given a spirit of power, love and discipline, and for that reason we have nothing to fear. We can hold onto his promises and be confident that he’ll see us through even the darkest of days.

2 Timothy 1:7 For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, of love and of self-discipline.

Psalm 138:3 When I called, you answered me; you made me bold and stouthearted.

Psalm 16:8 I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

Psalm 62:1-2 My soul finds rest in God alone; my salvation comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken.

Psalm 112: 1, 7-8 Praise the Lord! Happy are those who fear the Lord. They are not afraid of evil tidings; their hearts are firm, secure in the Lord. Their hearts are steady, they will not be afraid.

Psalm 91:1-2 You who live in the shelter of the Most High, who abide in the shadow of the Almighty, will say to the Lord, “My refuge and my fortress; my God in whom I trust.”

Hard Times May Come, But He’s There With Us Through Them All

Though we aren’t promised an easy life, we are told that Christ will be there with us when we believe in Him, that he won’t give us more than we can handle with His help, and even our hard times can be used to glorify God.

2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.

Philippians 4: 12-13 I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation . . . . I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

2 Thessalonians 3:3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen and protect you from the evil one.

Isaiah 40:29 He gives power to the weak and strength to the powerless.

1 Peter 5: 10 And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.

Hebrews 4:16 For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who in every respect has been tested as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore approach the throne of grace with boldness, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

Deuteronomy 31:6,8 Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes before you. He will be with you; he will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed.

2 Thessalonians 3:16 Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way.

Strength In Christ Our Lord And Savior

As the verses above illustrate, we’re told to call on Jesus Christ, and that he will hear us and give us strength, hope and a grace sufficient to carry us through. He will be our ever present help when we’re in need, and he can give us a peace that passes all understanding. For me that’s extremely encouraging.

Prayer For Help To Live With A Difficult Husband

Are you single and not sure how to pray to get married? Do you need prayer to find a husband or wife–or maybe you need to pray for yourself to find a spouse, but you aren’t sure how to do so?

I do pray for all my readers who are single and desire to be married. But, even more, I desire to equip YOU to pray for your future spouse and marriage with confidence, knowing that God really DOES want you to be married if you want to be.

To assist you in your prayers, I wanted to share a model prayer with you that is much the way I prayed when I was asking God to send me my own husband.

First, rest assured that God’s Word does promise you a spouse of your own if you want one

Not everyone is required to have a spouse. Some people have a special ability to stay single and enjoy it. The apostle Paul had this gift, and he said it allowed him to focus more on the Lord.

However, marriage is still a VERY good thing. Marriage–between one man and one woman–is the very first institution that God created. He set Adam, the first husband, together with Eve, the first wife, in Genesis chapter 2.

Why?

Because He said:

… “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” (Genesis 2:18).

So even though the apostle Paul wrote about his special ability to stay single and enjoy it, he was an unusual case. GOD said at the very beginning that it is not good for man to be alone … so He invented marriage.
