GREAT PRAYERS IN THE OLD TESTAMENT by Francis Dixon

Scripture Reference: Psalm 119: 18

In this study we are to examine this prayer of David: ““Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.

”” Our object will be to see exactly what it tells us and then to suggest ways in which we should pray this prayer, for it is a prayer which should arise from our hearts every time we read God’’s Word.

If we consider Psalm 119:18 carefully we shall see that this one petition embodies five truths. First of all we learn that:-

  1. (1) The Bible is a unique book. In this section of the psalm it is described as “”your word”” (verse 17); ““your law”” (verse 18); ““your commands”” (verse 19); ““your laws”” (verse 20); “”your statutes”” (verses 22 and 24); ““your decrees”” (verse 23), and the emphasis in each case is upon the word ‘‘your’’. The Bible is unique because it is God’’s Book; He is the Author. David’’s Bible was much smaller than ours, but now we have in the completed canon of Scripture 66 books, all of which are unique as they are inspired by God (2 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:21).
  2. (2) The Bible contains wonderful things. David says this in his prayer, and when we think of the scope of the Bible’’s contents –- its histories, types, poetry, doctrines and its prophecies –- we at once begin to realise how wonderful it is. It tells us about God, man, sin, death, heaven, hell and eternity, and above all about the amazing salvation that is in the Lord Jesus Christ –- look up 2 Timothy 3:15.
  3. (3) Before we can see the wonderful things our eyes must be opened. It was this that David prayed for –- that he might “”see”” these things hidden in God’’s Word. We are just the two who were walking on the Emmaus road (Luke 24:13-35). As we pray the prayer of Psalm 119:18 the Lord Himself comes near, revealing Himself to us and opening our eyes, so that our hearts burn within us and we hold fast to His statutes (verses 31-35). Compare 1 Corinthians 2:14.
  4. (4) Only God can open our eyes to see the wonderful things in His Word. What we need is spiritual illumination, that given to Peter at Caesarea Philippi (Matthew 16:13-18; compare Matthew 11:25 and Psalm 16:11).
  5. (5) To gain this illumination we must pray David’’s prayer every time we come to God’’s Word.

How should we pray? What things should we pray to see? There are three ways in which we, as individuals, should pray.

1. ““Open my eyes that I may…”…” see myself and the sinfulness of sin.

We should begin here when we pray, for we were born in sin (Psalm 51:5); we have committed sin (Isaiah 53:6); and we only ever see ourselves and our sin as we look into God’’s Word and He opens our eyes! In these days we are inclined to think that because of the progress man has made in so many areas, that our hearts are not so bad after all. Scripture teaches us the sinfulness of the human heart –- Genesis 6:5; Isaiah 1:5-6; Isaiah 64:6-7; Jeremiah 17:9; Matthew 15:19; Ephesians 2:1-3. Now read about Lot’’s backsliding (Genesis 19:1-38), Achan’’s deceitfulness (Joshua 7:19-23), David’’s impurity (2 Samuel 11:1-27), Peter’’s denial (Luke 22:54-62) and Diotrephes’’ pride (3 John 9). Are we any better by nature? When God shows us ourselves the revelation is very humbling. It was for Job (Job 40:4); for Isaiah (Isaiah 6:5); for the bride (Song of Songs 1:5-6); for David (Psalm 22:6); for Peter (Luke 5:8); for the Prodigal (Luke 15:21); and for Paul (Romans 7:14).

2. ““Open my eyes that I may…”…” see the love of God and His mercy and grace in the Lord Jesus Christ.

We know the story of the grace of God so well, which is declared in John 3:16.

How all-embracing is the love of God! Read again Luke 15:11-24 and revel in verses 20-24! The great proof of God’’s love is seen at Calvary, and when my eyes are opened to see the Lord Jesus dying there for me I cry out, “”the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me”” (Galatians 2:20), and humbly say, ““My Lord and my God!”” (John 20:28). Have you had this view of Christ crucified for you and Christ raised and exalted as your Saviour at the right hand of God? Read Philippians 2:5-11 and say to yourself, ‘‘All this was for me!’’

3. ““Open my eyes that I may…”…” see the kind of Christian God wants me to be.

Do you ever read your Bible with this prayer on your lips and in your heart? If you do and if you read Psalm 1:1-3 you will see at once the kind of Christian God wants you to be. You will see this in Romans 6:12-14, Romans 8:37-39, Ephesians 4:31-32 and 2 Timothy 4:18.

God wants every one of His children to be victorious in Christian living and fruitful in Christian service, and He has made every provision for us to live for Him and to serve Him in this way.

The Lord Jesus has died and risen again to give us His own victorious life, and this life is imparted to us in the Person of the Holy Spirit.

These, then, are the three special prayers that we should always pray when we take up our Bible to read it. Many other things will be revealed to us as well –- so let us pray this prayer and cultivate the habit of doing this often, remembering that the Holy Spirit is with us and in us, waiting to answer our prayer and to give the illumination we need.

Over the next few weeks, I’ve invited some of my dear blogging friends to share words of encouragement here on the blog while I rock my newborn baby and get some much-needed rest.

I’m thrilled to introduce you to Karina Allen, as she shares the constants of a meaningful prayer life and encourages us to break through our preconceptions of prayer to discover the conversation God is waiting have with us…   

What comes to mind when you hear the word ‘prayer’?

Do you think in terms of a really formal setting using really formal conversation? Do you think of a certain posture such as kneeling? Do you think of a specific religion that is extremely structured?

I have come to view prayer in the simplest of terms. It is a conversation. It is a conversation between us and God. How does conversation happen? One person talks and one person listens and vice versa. There are no rules and regulations. There are no formulas. There’s no time frame. There is no hard and fast structure.

That’s the beauty! It can look however we want it to look. The Holy Spirit is always on the move. Our God is all about accomplishing something new in us and through us. In order to do that, neither He nor we can get weighed down with sameness and any sort of legalism.

It can be a struggle. We desperately tend to want a formula or a guarantee. We want this abstract concept of prayer to fit in a nice little box.

Although there are no absolutes, I have thought about some constants of a meaningful prayer life.

Keep the lines of communication open

“Pray constantly.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

In order to have a fruitful prayer life, there needs to be prayer. We just have to do it.

Often, when I close my High School girls small group, I tell them that I will choose someone to pray if no one volunteers. I tell them that I know how to pray. They need to learn and become comfortable. I convey that it could be one word or one thousand words. Just be honest.

Our Father loves to simply hear the sound of our voices. He doesn’t care how eloquent we may or may not sound. Becoming comfortable with praying, especially aloud, happens the more we practice. I talk to Jesus all day, everyday… in my car, at work, at home, alone, with friends, with strangers, everywhere.

Where I go, He goes, so I can always talk to Him.

Prayer is about relationship, not receiving

“That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.” James 1:7

It’s not that we don’t go into prayer expecting. We just don’t go into prayer feeling entitled to receive.

God is a good Father who wants to bless His children. He wants to give to us and meet our needs. Sometimes He even wants to give us our wants. Beyond the physical aspects of receiving, God wants to bless us in the spiritual. First of all, He wants to give us Himself and then He wants to bless our souls.

All that He is and all that He offers is for us… His love, grace, salvation, forgiveness, mercy, joy, kindness, redemption, healing, provision, comfort and peace.

If you don’t have the words, it’s okay, He does

“In the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.” Romans 8:26

This is a fave verse of mine! This is me many times in my prayer time or during hard seasons.

I’m a writer, but sometimes words elude me. I can feel tapped out. So, when those times come, I just sit and listen for what He has to say to me. Sometimes, I sit and cry. Sometimes, I kneel or lie down on my face. I’m just camped in His presence.

I let Jesus do the heavy lifting. I let Him trade my heavy burden for His light one. The Lord knows our every thought. He can be trusted to connect with our spirits and pray on our behalf. And honestly, I think His words are far more effective than mine could ever be.

Here’s to the simplicity, ease and unpredictability of our communication with God! May He lavish us with deep intimacy!

8 Benefits of Prayer You Can’t Afford to Miss

“Let us come forward with boldness to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace for timely help.” – Heb. 4:16

How is your prayer life with the Lord?  If you’ve been a believer for some time, you may have realized the difficulty of building up a prayer life… and possibly even given up. And that’s really a loss because the benefits of prayer are so tremendous.

Since it’s so easy to get discouraged and give up on prayer, it’s worth considering some of the awesome benefits of prayer that make pursuing a prayer life worthwhile.

So in this post, we’ll consider eight benefits of prayer that I hope will encourage you to build up a persevering prayer life.

1. Prayer enables you to set your mind on the things above.

Colossians 3:2 says,

 “Set your mind on the things which are above, not on the things which are on the earth.”

How could we fulfill God’s word in this verse except by prayer?

Prayer is the  way to have our mind set on the things above. That’s because proper prayer elevates our mind from our earthly concerns to God’s heavenly interests.

 2. Prayer enables Christ to carry out His heavenly administration. 

The Lord’s instruction in Matthew 6:9-13 is not just a prayer to recite, but a pattern of prayer that carries out God’s administration,

 “Our Father who is in the heavens, Your name be sanctified; Your kingdom come; Your will be done, as in heaven, so also on earth…”

When our minds are set on the things above, as we just mentioned, we’re able to respond to God’s heavenly interests and express them through our prayer.

During such times of prayer, we become a reflection of Christ’s ministry in the heavens (Rom. 8:34). What a benefit!

 3. Prayer ushers you into the Holy of Holies to receive grace. 

Another benefit of prayer is to touch the “throne of grace” to find grace for your timely help.

Hebrews 4:16 says,

“Let us therefore come forward with boldness to the throne of grace that we may receive mercy and find grace for timely help.”

What is grace? It is more than God’s unmerited favor.

Grace is “God in Christ as our supply and enjoyment, conveyed to us and realized through the bountiful supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ (Phil. 1:19)”—Phil. 4:23, note 1 in the Recovery Version.

When we pray, we enter into the Holy of Holies and touch the throne of grace to enjoy the hidden Christ in our spirit.

In fact, enjoying the flowing of God’s grace in our prayer is more important than having our prayers answered.

The primary thing is that grace a river flows from the throne and into our being. Here is a refreshing hymn that expresses this benefit. You may even want to sing or declare the lyrics as a part of your prayer.

4. Prayer charges your “spiritual battery” to live the Christian life.

The Christian life is a tool or toy with a battery. Without being regularly charged, our “spiritual battery” will lack the power needed to carry out its intended functions. Our prayer is our connection to the “charging station.”

When we pray, our “spiritual battery” is charged with the heavenly current. This heavenly current, this divine electricity, is the Triune God Himself as grace flowing from the throne—the “heavenly power plant”—into us.

Revelation 22:1 says,

“And He showed me a river of water of life, bright as crystal, proceeding the throne of God and of the Lamb…”

This divine, flowing river proceeding from God’s throne supplies the power to charge us whenever we pray.

5. Prayer brings you into fellowship with the Lord. 

Prayer is the contact of our spirit with God’s spirit.  John 4:24 says,

 “God is Spirit and those who worship Him must worship in spirit…”

It’s by such God-contacting prayer that we enter into fellowship with the Lord and become conscious of the fact that we are really one spirit with Him and that He is actually one spirit with us (1 Cor. 6:17). This also is a tremendous benefit!

6. Prayer renews you for the new man.

Ephesians 4:23-24 says,

“And that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind and put on the new man…”

This means that whenever we contact the Lord as the Spirit with our spirit through prayer, this spirit spreads into our mind for our renewing. In such a way we are being renewed for the new man.

This new man is Christ’s Body today and will become the New Jerusalem for eternity (Rev. 21:2). How wonderful that we can be renewed for the new man by our prayer. What a benefit!

7. Prayer lets the peace of Christ arbitrate in your heart.

Colossians 3:15 says,

“And let the peace of Christ arbitrate in your hearts, to which also you were called in one Body, and be thankful.”

This kind of peace isn’t just freedom from worry, but the peace between different peoples. How can we, as believers, let the peace of Christ arbitrate in all our relationships with people, especially other believers that are different from us. It’s only by our prayer.

When we pray, Christ will become the real umpire, ruler, and decider in everything. The main “call” our “Umpire” makes is “you’re wrong! Repent. Confess and say you’re sorry.”

Such prayer preserves the peace in our marriage life, family life, Christian life and church life. This arbitrating peace is a great benefit of prayer!

8. Prayer allows the word of Christ to dwell in you richly

Colossians  3:16 says,

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom…” 

But how?  One of the greatest discoveries of my Christian life was learning how to receive God’s word in the Bible by means of prayer, that is, pray-reading it.

By pray-reading, you not only gain some mental understanding from the Bible, but you’re nourished with life element in God’s Word. God’s words become “spirit and life” to you (John 6:63).

Don’t just take my word for it. Here are 12 tips on how to pray-read the Word of God to be spiritually nourished.

Try it! See if you don’t say with the prophet Jeremiah, “Your word became to me the gladness and joy of my heart”  (Jer. 15:16). This is a most wonderful benefit of prayer!

One of the most underestimated strengths in the Christian life is prayer. It is the way we communicate with the Maker of the Universe and He not only hears us, but He also responds.

Through prayer we access healing, wisdom, discernment, peace, protection, joy and so much power we could never experience on our own. It is through prayer that I have seen the transforming power of God come into my heart and life never before.

Today I want to share with you three specific prayers that have had the most impact on my life.

1. A Prayer Over Negative Thinking

If you ever want a sneak peek look into the direction that your day or week is headed just look at your thoughts. What you're thinking has the power to direct the course of an entire day. Starting with positive and truthful thoughts can lead to a peaceful and fulfilling day.

Negative thoughts not aligned with God's truth can lead to a confusing and frustrating day. This is why God wants us to keep our thoughts on good things.

Philippians 4:8 tells us:

Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable–if anything is excellent or praiseworthy–think about such things. – Philippians 4:8 NIV

If changing our thoughts from negative to positive can change our day from good to bad, they also have to power to direct the course of our lives. Now that is serious! Which is why the Bible also instructs us to:

Take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. – 2 Corinthians 10:5 NIV

A constant prayer of mine is that my thoughts will align with God's truth. This is hard work, but the reward is a peaceful and fruitful life, which is well worth the work.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for your good thoughts about me. May my thoughts reflect your truth and nothing else. When I have a negative thought, I pray for your help to quickly recognize it and that You would empower me to focus on what is true, pure, and lovely. Thank You Lord. In Jesus Christ Name I pray, Amen.

2. A Prayer for Discernment 

Now more than ever it seems we have so many options before us: 

Which school to go to?
Which job to take?
Which church to attend?

Some decisions are even heavier: 

Should we get married?
Should I accept this job opportunity that requires my entire family to move?
Should I elect to have this surgery?

Having options and the freedom to make our own decisions is a wonderful privilege, but it also may lead to the stress and anxiety of wondering if we are making the right decision. Good for us our Heavenly Father is ready and willing to guide and direct our steps and provide us with His wisdom and discernment to make good decisions. James 1:5 says:

If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. – James 1:5 NIV

We can blindly make decisions without seeking God, but why not seek the God who knows the beginning from the end?

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for guiding me in your wisdom. I pray for discernment today over all the decisions I will make. I trust Your guidance and leading Lord. I love You. In Jesus Christ Name I pray, Amen.

3. A Prayer for Strength to Surrender

The first prayer is for the strength to surrender to God's will and desire for my life. Jesus offers us life and life to the full (John 10:10) but we will never experience that full life if we don't allow God to have complete control of our life.

The challenge here is that we have the battle between our sinful flesh and the new Spirit God has given us upon salvation. As I'm sure you know the level of power it takes to follow God, and not our flesh, can at times feel impossible.

So my prayer to God is for the strength to surrender to Him and not myself. I pray for His strength to do it because my strength will fail me. But even when I'm weary and weak the Lord is willing and ready to grant me His strength to surrender to the things I think I can't do or be.

This simple prayer has allowed me to see God's hand in my life, marriage, and parenting never before.

Dear Heavenly Father, Your ways are higher than my ways. I pray for power and strength to surrender my way and follow your best way. I trust You Lord. In Jesus Christ Name I pray. Amen.
