What Makes A Successful Career , Sample of Essays
The reasons why people succeed in their careers are probably as numerous as the number of successful people.
When we begin to think about the qualities these people possess, it becomes apparent that we can classify or categorize them into a few specific groups – those who really enjoy their work, those who are obsessed with their work (they either want to be the ‘best’; or have a fear of failure), those who are blessed with exceptional talent in their field, and those who have planned their work and worked their plan. Perhaps as I describe them, you will identify which group applies to you. The first group of people with successful careers I’d to discuss is those who simply enjoy their work.
This group of people is very fortunate, or lucky if you prefer, because they have found a job they do well and can do it without having to deal with the negativity normally associated with work.
They get up every morning, head to work, and are glad to be going, un most of us who can only think about all of the other things we would rather be doing. With this group, few things give them as much pleasure in life as knowing that although today’s work is done, they can do it all again tomorrow.
Having that kind of outlook on ones career is a success, despite how much money you make or how well you perform at work.
In the next group we find individuals who are obsessed with their work. These people have no room in life for anything but their career. Friends, family, marriage, recreation all come secondary to success in the work place. There are any number of explanations for why these people are the way they are and, while I’m no psychologist, I’d to offer my own personal observation.

Of the people I’ve known over the years who fall into this category two basic types exist. One is the person who has to be the ‘Best’; .
It makes no difference what they are doing; this individual will pour every ounce of their heart and soul into being successful. The other type is essentially no different than the first one I’ve described.Primarily the difference lies in their motivation – this person is successful due to a fear of failure.
Although, the driver is different, the means by which they achieve their goal is the same; they pour heart and soul into accomplishing success. There are others who can attribute success in their career to nothing more than exceptional talent.
They have any uncanny ability to perform at a level unmatched by any one else. The people who fall into this category most often come to mind when we think of careers in sports.
This is not to say that our sports superstars have not devoted a lifetime of work toward being a successful athlete and I would never slight their personal sacrifices or the hard work they have endured.
However, I do believe it safe to say that juke ‘m and duke ‘m moves Barry Sanders (former running back for the Detroit Lines) and stretched out, flying through the air, finger tip, receptions Jerry Rice (wide receiver for the San Francisco 49 ers) cannot be taught or coached; you are born with that kind of talent and it has lead to the success of many an athletes in most every sport. This same kind of talent, although not as readily identifiable, exists in many other career fiends as well. I’m sure that many doctors lawyers, artists, etc. owe their success to an exceptional amount of raw talent at what they do.
In the last group I am going to identify, we find those individuals who have a very calculated plan for success.
They have sat down at the table at some point in their life and determined this is what I am going to do, how I am going to do it, and I will be successful if I just plan my work and work my plan.
In my life, I have had the pleasure of knowing several individuals who fall into this category. The majority of them have been people who are successful in the ‘Amway’; business.

To many this will probably seem as though I have uttered a four letter word, but none the less, they do fall into this category. They have made a conscious decision to be in the business, they have decided how they are going to work the business, and in doing so have planned the work and worked the plan.One other common thread among the successful people, regardless of which of the categories they fall into, that should be mentioned here is this — they almost always associate with, surround themselves by, or congregate with others who are successful in their careers also.
Why? Because success breeds success and they know this.
I hope this information has helped you recognize which category applies to you. If it has, then this essay has been a success for me. Also, the fact that you now know which classification applies to you could help you in becoming more successful at whatever it is you call your career.
Defining Success in Your Career |
Success is not a one-way street that let’s you coast on your bike while riding downhill. There are lots of pot holes, flat tires, some flowers on the way, but mostly, it’s up and down, and you just need to believe in yourself and keep on going. You will experience true success as you invest time and energy in actions and projects that make you feel satisfied and fulfilled.
Top 1% moments help us define what success means at different stages in our life
These top 1% moments are available to all of us regardless of where we are in our life—married, single, lots of money, no money, fancy graduate degrees, no degrees, kids, no kids, love your job, despise your job, old, young, lots of challenges, or minimal challenges. These accomplishments are important to recognize and celebrate because when one of us reaches higher, we can all leverage the inspiration to take a step further ourselves.
A top 1% moment is when you accomplish something that you feel good about and is meaningful to you.
They can be big or small—ordering business cards, swimming 110 miles from Cuba to Florida (thank you, Diana Nyad), going to sleep before midnight, changing careers, writing your first book, successfully leading a team project, buying your first home, re-connecting with a relative, running fifty-two marathons in fifty-two weeks to raise awareness and money for pancreatic cancer (thank you, Marathon Goddess), getting back into your photography hobby, earning your certification as a yoga teacher, making your first public speech, completing your first 5k walk/run, or simply making yourself a priority.
These moments expand your view of what’s possible and build confidence in yourself. Top 1% moments help us define our personal best. It’s not a competition; it’s about cooperating. We can all live in our top 1%.
Here are the recurring themes that emerge with my clients when they experience their top 1% moments:
Dream: The journey starts with an exciting dream. Your dream/goal may seem impossible and crazy to others, but it’s not about them; it’s about what adds meaning to YOUR life.
For example, Diana Nyad recently fulfilled a lifelong dream of swimming 110 miles from Cuba to Florida.
After four failed attempts to complete her goal, Diana, at the ripe age of sixty-four, became the first woman to complete this accomplishment while swimming without a shark cage to protect her. This was going to be her last attempt either way.
And yes, swimming 110 miles and fifty-three hours is definitely beyond what most of us can comprehend. (If you are not a swimmer, substitute that word for something that does represent YOUR dream.) Diana’s journey showed us what it means to have a dream and pursue it.
Belief (a.k.a. mindset): All people who achieve top 1% moments have a deep belief in self. Even when others think your dream is crazy, YOU need to believe it. That’s key with every new invention or achievement.You may not know how you’re going to do it, but you believe you CAN. This is exactly what happened with Julie Weiss, known as the Marathon Goddess.
She had a crazy idea to run fifty-two marathons in fifty-two weeks to raise awareness and funds to benefit pancreatic cancer (she lost her father to the disease). She had no idea how the journey would unfold.
She started with one marathon, and for the next year, she did a marathon every week while working her full-time job. She’s raised over $200,000 and has decided to continue running marathons and raising awareness.
Challenges: Every top 1% achievement has challenges. There is no other way. The challenges may seem unique, but they are all just challenges—time, money, resources, health, knowledge, motivation, etc.
Challenges test how much you want to complete your goal.
Whether you are looking to take a photography class or complete your first 5k race, speed bumps will show up, but know they are not a valid reason to abandon your heartfelt goals.
Resilience: You may fail several times and feel discouraged many times before success. Diana failed four times and tried one more time—that alone is courageous and a top 1% effort. Part of living in your top 1% is knowing when to move on. Diana understood this and decided this would have been her last attempt.
Even if she didn’t complete the swim, it would have been a top 1% effort. Often, when we are operating in the unknown territory, it’s scary, and you start to doubt yourself. Every top 1% moment has that brief period where you want to throw in the towel and call it quits.
It’s part of the process, so don’t let the feeling push you off course.
Age: Often, you will be on the wrong side of the age factor—too old, too young, too much experience, or not enough experience. Perhaps you’re too young to start a business or too old to change careers. Forget this and keep moving forward.
Disregard age as an excuse. As forty-one-year-old Olympic medalist Dara Torres said, “the water doesn’t know your age…[goals] may become harder to achieve, but your dreams can’t stop because you’ve hit a certain age.
” Invest the time to figure out what you want to do and keep moving forward.
Stretch Zone: Every great dream and goal pushes you into your stretch zone—the zone where you need to draw on your strengths, face uncertainty, move past challenges, and achieve something beyond what many thought was possible. When you declare that you are writing a book or changing jobs, there will be lots of uncertainty and challenges. Top 1% moments do not happen in your comfort or stress zone. They happen in the stretch zone.
Top 1% Team: Although great journeys may start from an individual effort, they are more commonly team efforts. Diana Nyad had over thirty people on her team helping her navigate the waters, chart her course, and provide care during her swim. Epic efforts require resources from many different areas. Do you have the right team to help you share YOUR top 1%?
Everyone can enjoy top 1% moments from any starting place. You need to show up with the willingness to invest time and effort, face challenges, and make progress.
You will find yourself completely committed to your vision when it’s meaningful and genuinely excites you. You may have some speed bumps or flat tires on your path, so stay on your course.
Your top 1% moments can be big or small as long as they’re meaningful to you.

When you’re younger, and you’re asked what you want to be when you’re older, you usually come up with singer, vet or astronaut, but the common denominator of all these occupations is success!
Success is defined by climbing up the career ladder to a prominent position, one that makes you feel you’ve made it in life. The meaning of success, however, differs from person to person. For some, it’s defined by salary; for others, by job satisfaction or even a great work-life balance.
Here are 15 tips that can help you advance in your career and discover ultimate success.
1. Identify Your End Goal
The first step to succeeding in your career is figuring out what your end goal is. Is it advancing within your current position? Is it changing careers altogether?
Whatever it is, by identifying your end goal, you’ll have something tangible to work towards. You can also set a timeframe for your goals and monitor how far you’ve progressed towards them. If circumstances change, or things become too tricky, adjust your targets accordingly.

2. Step Your Comfort Zone

7. Eat Healthily
Food is fuel for your brain, and a car, you need the right gas to keep you going! If you indulge in heavy carbs and sugary foods on a daily basis, you’ll end up feeling lethargic, and you won’t have the right energy to perform to the best of your abilities. If you eat healthier snacks, though, you’ll be a lot more focused and determined.
8. Take Care of Yourself
As well as food, you should also look after your mental wellbeing to avoid burnout. Practise mindfulness, find a good work-life balance and learn to switch off once in a while. Find hobbies to take your mind off work, and just have some fun! When you’re happy in your personal life, you’re more ly to be satisfied at work too.
9. Be a Good Listener
While you might think that having the gift of the gab will get you a golden ticket to advance in your career, you’re sorely mistaken! Having the ability to listen carefully to what your peers are saying is integral. Listening carefully, absorbing information and asking questions will prove useful as you gain more experience and get promoted.
10. Dress for Success
If I haven’t hammered this enough already, here’s another shot!
You should dress for the job you want, not the one you have. The power of clothes is magical, and if you always dress professionally, you’ll naturally be treated with more respect and will be viewed differently. If you arrive to work wearing creased clothes or, worse, tracksuits, you’ll prove nothing other than you have no interest in your job.
11. Be Trustworthy
When people trust you, you’re more ly to be given more responsibilities, and you’ll be at the front of the line when the next promotion comes around.
But what makes a trustworthy employee?
To keep it simple, authenticity and consistency sum up the most essential qualities of a trustworthy person. It’s someone who doesn’t slack, who is always positive, honest and is relied on in a time of need.
12. Work Smarter, Not Harder
While many workers think that burning the midnight oil will help them succeed, the truth is quite the contrary – why work 10 hours, when you can effectively do the same work in 8? The solution is simple: work smarter and not harder. Develop methods to stay focused and power through your tasks without slacking or getting distracted. That way, you’ll have more free time to enjoy outside of work and will generally feel a lot more satisfied.
13. Build Strong Connections
You never know when you’ll need someone’s professional help, which is why it’s important to develop an active list of connections. You don’t want the first time someone has heard from you in five years to be when you’re looking for a new job.
Instead, make genuine friendships with those in your circle and try to help them where you can too. Networking is a two-way street, and if you can help someone, why not do so?
14. Create Your Own Opportunities
When something doesn’t go your way, don’t sit around and mope about it! Instead, go out there and create your own opportunities. If you can see a gap in the market or a role in your organisation that needs filling, why not bite the bullet and suggest it?
Entrepreneur and businesswoman Huda Kattan did just that when she left a secure finance job to fund her hobby of creating mink eyelashes and professional makeup. She has since advanced from a struggling makeup artist and beauty blogger to a social media sensation in no time and now has a successful brand (Huda Beauty) tucked under her belt.
15. Think of Solutions, Not Problems
While identifying problems is good, you also need to be able to solve those problems. In other words, if you don’t have the solution, it’s pointless highlighting an issue.
