Prayer To Break the Obsession of Gluttony

Is the Sin of Gluttony Really That Serious?

Prayer To Break the Obsession of Gluttony

That question was asked by a church member as I recently preached on gluttony. Why might we ask? Christian culture approves of giggling about gluttony in ways that it would never bless laughing at lust. We probably laugh more comfortably about gluttony because the right use of food and drink is a very public matter where the right use of sex is a very private matter.

What is Gluttony?

But the fact that we giggle about gluttony might reveal it as a most pernicious sin. The English word comes from the Latin and means “to gulp.” Gluttony idolizes food to feed our own self-love. Merriam-Webster defines gluttony as “habitual greed or excess in eating…greedy or excessive indulgence”.

Is gluttony really that serious? Consider the following:

  • Gluttony plunged the whole human race into a state of sin and misery with the first transgression (Genesis 3:6).
  • Gluttony, or “excess of food,” helped earned a curse of utter destruction upon Sodom, the standard example of God’s wrath and judgment (Ezekiel 16:49).
  • In Moses’ day, When Israel craved meat in the wilderness, the Lord sent quail. While the meat was yet between their teeth, before it was consumed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD struck down the people with a very great plague” Strikingly, the name of the place was called “Kibroth-hattaavah” which means “Graves of Craving” (Number 11:18-34; Psalm 78:26-31).
  • Drunkards (liquid-based gluttons) will not inherit the kingdom of God (1 Corinthians 6:10).

So, yes! Even a quick glance at Scripture shows us that gluttony is a big deal. It is no laughing matter; it earns eternal judgment.

How can we identify this sin in our lives?

Gregory the Great and Thomas Aquinas laid out five everyday expressions of gluttony (Summa Theologica Part 2-2, Question 148:4):

  1. Eating too soon. Being mentally consumed with what you will eat next is gluttony. Think of Esau who sold his birthright for the pot of beans that he thought he couldn’t live without immediately (Genesis 25:29-34).
  2. Eating too expensively. Focusing too much on the quality of the food draws our attention from the Creator to the creation. The Israelites in the wilderness craved the meat, fish, cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions, and garlic that had been in Egypt. Bread that God delivered every day from heaven in the form of manna just wasn’t high-brow enough for the faithless foodies in the wasteland (Numbers 11:4-6). Our culture is full of foodies seeking satisfaction in every new and better flavor.
  3. Eating too much. Sodom was guilty of “excess of food” (Ezekiel 16:49). While weight is not of the essence of gluttony, one can suspect that gluttony in an increasing matter of the heart in our nation the number of bulging waistlines and the “shrinking” size of stadium bleacher seats.
  4. Eating too daintily. Picky eaters may idolize food preparation, or they may idolize NOT partaking of certain foods (1 Timothy 4:3). People with eating disorders engaged in gluttony in this way too.
  5. Eating too eagerly. The Israelites learned that God can judge faster than we can eat when they died with the meat still between their teeth (Number 11:18-34).

What then, is the solution to sin of gluttony?

First, we need to confess our self-love that we express with food. We need to call this sin what it is and recognize that God hates it. We must also see that we will never be satisfied when we seek hope in food. We indulge in comfort foods to mourn a life-crisis, and then find that the comfort flees but the calories remain. Sin never delivers on the lies it promises.

Second, we must recognize that Christ came to save gluttons. He came so close to tax-collectors and sinners that he himself was accused of being a glutton and a drunkard (Matthew 11:19). If you are guilty of gluttony, know that Jesus came to save people of your ilk. He died for them.

And he feasted with them, and he fed them. He satisfied them. Only Jesus can satisfy the longing soul and fills the hungry with good things (Psalm 107:9). My grandfather was converted in his late thirties. He knew how to party, and he loved his cigars.

The man who led him to Christ watched Grandpa’s relationship with his stogies during the Bible study on the Gospel of John in which he was converted. Grandpa sat in a back corner of the living room with another man nursing their stogies week-by-week.

The leader knew that something was happening in Grandpa’s heart when the cigar he so loved went out in his hand. Instead of tending tediously to his tobacco, he was taken with Christ. The stogie ceased to burn; a new passion was beginning to burn in his heart. No food, no drink, no smoke will ever satisfy.

But Christ does, and when he does, doing the will of the Lord becomes more consuming than the need for food or any other substance.

Third, we need to discipline ourselves daily with a few questions to ask with every bite of food we put in our hands to eat.

As Christians, we await the Lord’s feast of rich food, a feast of well-aged wine, of rich food full of marrow and of aged wine well refined at the marriage supper of the Lamb.

Until then, those who have experienced the wonder of Christ find that food has better flavor than ever, rightly used. Here are a few we can ask ourselves each day to kill the sin of gluttony before it kills us:

  1. Is it time for me to feast? There are times when God calls us to feast. We are even called to eat “too much” in celebration of God’s grace (Deuteronomy 14:25-26). Godliness does not consist in keeping a 2000 calorie per day diet. It requires wisdom. We need to know when to feast, but we also need to ask:
  2. Is it time for me to fast? The discipline of fasting teaches us many things, one of which is that we are not to be enslaved by food (Matthew 4:2-4), and that we cannot generate enough earthly strength to fulfill God’s will (Acts 13:2-3).
  3. Is it time for me to moderate my food so that whether I eat or drink I do it all to God’s glory (1 Corinthians 10:31)?
  4. Can I receive this next bite of food as a gift of God with true thanksgiving and with holy gladness (1 Timothy 4:4, Acts 2:36)?
  5. Do I know that this food will serve as fuel to give me strength to seek and serve the Lord? Do I need these calories to accomplish the Lord’s will or not (e.g. Acts 9:19)?
  6. Does my “body-conscience” allow me to eat this? Is my belly communicating that it is full enough or not full enough? Are my pants growing too tight? Just as the conscience can be seared in other ways, so we can become comfortable with sinful eating patterns and make adjustments to make our sin less painful, we should still pay heed to the warnings God has built into our physical bodies.
  7. Can I legitimately say to other younger Christians looking on “Follow me as I follow Christ by taking this next bite?” Paul recognized that he could not fail to follow Jesus in food and drink—the most basic elements of daily life—and expect others to follow him in deeper matters of life and theology. So he said “I discipline my body and I make it my slave, lest, after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:27).

How to Overcome Gluttony and Stop Comfort Eating

Prayer To Break the Obsession of Gluttony

How to Overcome Gluttony

Is Gluttony a Sin?
In the turn of the century, early 1900’s you hardly heard of heart attacks, cancer, and other types of diseases today.  The bible does talk about drunkenness and gluttony.  Did you know drunkenness and gluttony is a spirit?  Do you feel good about yourself?  It is an unloving spirit working on you to overeat. Is Gluttony a sin!

Sin of gluttony in America is a problem. In the turn of the century we eating 4 pounds of sugar a year.  Today, we are consuming 130 pounds per person per year. Not only that most of your prepared food and even spices have sugars added to them.  In the early 1900’s diabetes were very few and now over 10 million.

On saturated fats is much higher in our foods.  Also in the turn of the century, heart attacks were unheard of.

The death rate annually from hardening of arteries and degenerative heart disease in the United States is the highest in the world compared to everywhere else.

Life Insurance Companies has shown that a man 45 years of age, who increases his weight by 25 pounds over standard weight, reduces his life expectancy 25%.

The reason is the types of fat we eat.  People are misled by the polyunsaturates in margarines and oils.   They don’t look for hydrogenated on the labels.  The hydrogenated in your oil or butter is plastic.

How to Overcome Gluttony?

We are overweight and eating all the wrong things.  So, what does a person need to eat?  I say the caveman diet.  What is the caveman diet – eliminating processed foods.  You want to lose weight?  Then Eat as natural as you can such as:

  • Fruits ad vegetables, including leafy greens
  • Eat meat 3 times a week
  • Eat less and more often.
  • Don’t eat junk food
  • Eat less sweets
  • Stay away from boxed dinners
  • Less  carbohydrates and starches from bread

Include exercise such as a rebound trampoline in your house to jump while watching TV to overcome overeating.  If you cannot control your food intake and overeat for comfort, you may have a spirit of gluttony.  You may need deliverance from sin of Gluttony then you are able to overcome gluttony.

Other reasons of a spirit of gluttony is because of how we handle our emotions.

When you feel rejected do you eat for comfort?  Need for love?  Do you, when you feel lonely reach for cookies?  When you feel stressed, need to drink some type of alcohol to deal with your stress or some type of food?  That is a false pathway to peace called comfort food or drink.  That is when you use something else besides God to take care of your need.

Deliverance From Gluttony

Read this prayer of deliverance from a Spirit of Gluttony out loud to overcome gluttony

Father God I forgive those who rejected me and hurt me.  I let go of any bitterness I have towards anyone.  Amen.  Father God, forgive me for eating food as a false pathway to peace.  Instead of going to you because I feel lonely or rejected or stressed, forgive me for not going to you.

Forgive me father for drunkenness and gluttony and any other addictions such as to sugar, coffee, etc. or to any drugs or medicines.  Father God, I come against these spirits of gluttony, addictions, false pathways to peace, loneliness, rejection, etc.  I repent, renounce and I cast these spirits me and send them to dry places now in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.

Father God, I know addictions to food comes from not loving myself and when I feel depressed, I go to food for comfort.  I repent and renounce for not loving myself and having a spirit of self hatred.

I also forgive myself for all my past sins and regrets.  I let myself go free and choose to see me as a child of the most high God who is the king of the universe.  I also see me as God’s perfect handiwork.

  Amen.

I also address these other spirits by repenting and renouncing these spirits related to gluttony:

  • Nervousness
  • Alcohol
  • Unforgiveness
  • Compulsive Eating
  • Resentment
  • Retaliation
  • Anger
  • Wrath
  • Hatred
  • Violence
  • Murder with the tongue
  • Frustrations
  • Bondage to food
  • Self-pity
  • Slavery
  • Self-reward
  • Fantasy
  • caffeine
  • Spirit of Fear
  • Diet pills
  • Indulgence
  • Self hatred, self-rejection
  • Past regrets, self pity
  • Addictions to food
  • Craving for Alcohol
  • Craving for Particular Foods
  • False Pathway to Peace
  • Not taking care of the temple
  • Addictions to any kind
  • Beverages
  • I to eat

Overcome gluttony spirits: I bind these spirits, break its power off of me, cast these spirits to the dry places now in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  Amen.

Father God, fill me with your love, your peace and hope and with your spirit of self control in the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth.  Help me to run to you instead of food.  Amen.  Thank you for the deliverance from Gluttony.

9 Powerful Prayers for Gluttony

Prayer To Break the Obsession of Gluttony

Having self control is just one characteristic that God calls us to possess. Sometimes our desires outweigh our good conscience and sensibility. These powerful prayers for gluttony will help you to seek strength and relief from the Lord so that you can remain obedience and faithful.

Prayer #1

Heavenly Father I come to You to pray for self-control, which is one of the precious ‘fruit-of-the-Spirit’. Lord I am overweight and know that I eat more that I should, which demonstrates that I am lacking in this beautiful gift of self-control.

Lord I know in my heart that there is no satisfaction in food, (or anything else for that matter), and that my gluttony only exposes the idolatrous nature in me, for which I repent. I am asking that in the power of Your Holy Spirit.. You would help me to become a more self-controlled person in my eating habits.

Lord I know that I am not able to live a godly, self-controlled life in my own strength but You have said in Your Word that You have provided all I need to live godly in Christ Jesus. Help me I pray to appropriate all that I have in Christ, to walk in spirit and truth, to mortify this appetite for food and to depend on You to deliver me from this bondage to sin.

I pray that You finish the good work in me that You started when I first believed in the Lord Jesus as my Saviour – and I will give You all the praise and glory, Amen.

Prayer #2

Heavenly Father, I confess to You that I have become what can only be described as greedy and gluttonous and am ashamed that I have allowed my compulsive eating habit to become so out-of-control. I am so ashamed of my life and so sorry that I have allowed this obsession with food to take such control over my life – and it causes me much shame and heartache.

Forgive me I pray and help me Lord to break free from my over-eating. Help me to overcome this eating disorder I pray, for I know that without Your help and strength I will not be able to permanently break free.

I was reading the Bible Lord, and when I read that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, it made me realise that my gluttony has wider implications than I had realised, for it shows a shocking disrespect for You and for the body that You have given me.

Lord I know that Your grace is sufficient to for all my needs, and that Your strength is made perfect in my weakness.. and Lord my weakness has to do with eating too much food – but I do believe that Your grace is sufficient to help me though this.. and so I pray that You would give me the grace and help to me to break free this sinful habit of ungodly gluttony.

Thank You Lord for Your promises of sufficient grace and mercy to help in this time of need and I ask for Your daily guidance to overcome and strengthen my resolve to step away from over-eating into temperance and grace.

Prayer #3

Father, it is written in Your Word that if I confess with my lips that Jesus is Lord and believe in my heart that You have raised Him from the dead, I shall be saved. Father, I am Your child and confess that Jesus Christ is Lord over my spirit, my soul and my body. I make Him Lord over every situation in my life. Therefore, I can do all things through Christ Jesus Who strengthens me.

Father, I have made a quality decision to give You my appetite. I choose Jesus rather than the indulgence of my flesh. I command my body to get in line with Your Word. I eat only as much as is sufficient for me. I eat and am satisfied.

Christ the Messiah will be magnified and get glory and praise in this body of mine and will be boldly exalted in my person. Thank You, Father, in Jesus’ name! Hallelujah! Amen.

Prayer #4

Lord, forgive me, I have become addicted to food. I never thought this was possible but I have discovered that my excessive eating and obesity is simply a result of being addicted to food.

Lord I want to change my life and make it count for You and while I make food the god of my life, I know that You are not in Your rightful position. Thank You for bringing me to an understanding that my weight problem was much more than simply eating too much food, but has become a substitute for You in my life.

Lord I have no right to expect You to help me in this addiction – but I know that You are a gracious God Who forgives His children when they recognise their sin and confess their faults to YOU and turn from their wicked ways and place You back in Your rightful place.

I realise that during the time that I have made food the god in my life, my relationship with You has been suffering..

I now realise that I have been fellowship with You Lord, for a long time – but You are a gracious God, Who has promised that if Your children confess their sin – in the quietness of our heart, You are faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness – which places us back into a right relationship with You.

Thank You that I have restored my fellowship with You Father, by simply admitting my sin – help me now to overcome this weight problem I have – and I will give You all the praise and all the glory – in Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer #5

Loving Lord, I need Your help to bring my eating habit under control so that I may be freed from excess eating and enabled to get my weight under control.

I ask that You would help me to gain the victory over this sin of gluttony, for I know that without Your sufficient grace and help I will not be able to curb my excessive appetite.

Lord it is my desire to live a life that is honouring to You and I cry out to You to help me Lord, for without You I can only fail. But thanks be to God that I can do all things through Christ, Who gives me the strength.

Lord I am seeking You with my whole heart and I realise that what is impossible for me to achieve in my own strength is possible with You. Help me to eat my food with integrity and in a manner that is pleasing to You.. and prevent me from finding excuses to over-indulge, knowing that to do so is not only lying to myself.. but also to You.

Father as I come before You to ask for victory over my sin of gluttony I thank You for what You are doing in my life and pray that as I discipline my body to eat appropriately, so that I may live in holiness and righteousness in every area of life. This I ask in Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer #6

Deliver me I pray from my over-eating, which I confess can only be called “gluttony”. Lord I know that this is a habit that I have allowed to develop in my life, which has almost become an obsession – and I pray that in Your grace You would enable me to break free from my eating compulsion and receive full and lasting deliverance.

Lord I have used food as a comfort and as a prop when I have felt alone and miserable, and it is causing my weight to increase which makes me more miserable and causes me to want to eat more – and Lord I am in a bad state, and am asking for Your help in this.

I pray that in Your love and grace You would deliver me from this horrid cycle of comfort eating and help me to gain a healthy balance in what I eat.. so that I eat food in order to live rather then live in order to eat food.

Help me I pray to have the resolve to eat and drink wisely and in a manner that is honouring to You – for the Bible tells us that whether we eat or drink – we are to do everything to Your honour and glory. Help me to honour You in all I do and especially in my eating –this I ask in Jesus name, Amen.

Prayer #7

My body is for the Lord. I dedicate my body — presenting all my members and faculties — as a living sacrifice, holy and well pleasing to You, presenting them as implements of righteousness. I am united to You, Lord, and become one spirit with You. My body is the temple, the very sanctuary of the Holy Spirit Who lives within me, Whom I have received as a gift from You, Father.

I am not my own. I was bought for a price, made Your own. So then, I honor You and bring glory to You in my body. Therefore, I always exercise and discipline myself, bringing under authority my carnal affections, bodily appetites and worldly desires.

I endeavor in all respects to have a clean conscience, void of offense toward You, Father, and toward men.

I keep myself from idols — from anything and everything that would occupy the place in my heart due to You, from any sort of substitute for You that would take first place in my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Prayer #8

Father God, I confess that I have not honoured You with my whole body soul and spirit but have rather indulged in greediness and gluttony, which has become a thorn in my flesh.

Indeed Lord I confess that I have become a slave of my eating habits and I pray that You would help me to break this habit that is so dishonouring to You for I know that my body is the temple of the Holy Spirit and I truly want to offer my body as a living sacrifice that is holy and pleasing to You Lord.

Loving Lord I know that I cannot do this in my own strength but I know that by the power of Your Spirit, You can break this bondage within. Lord I acknowledge that the power of sin and death in my life was broken at the cross of Christ Jesus my Lord and I come to You in my helplessness and pray that You would enable me to break this gluttony that is destroying my life.

Lord help me I pray. Change me into the person that You would have me be in Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Prayer #9

Dear heavenly Father, I have suddenly realised that eating has become a true obsession with me and I am quite shocked to realise the damage that this gluttony is doing to my body and to my relationships – including my relationship with You Lord. I ask that You would help me to break this insane craving for food and to remember that in all things, including my eating habits, I my life should glorify You.

Help me Lord to be wise in what I eat and I pray that by Your grace You would show me those foods that are detrimental to my body and that cause my moods to fluctuate so dramatically. I realise that so often it is not only my body that is affected by this obsession to eat, but my emotions are being influenced, causing me to become angry or depressed and even lazy.

Lord I know that when You are put in Your proper place in my life other things including this gluttony will also be put in the right perspective. Help me Lord and guide me to take stock of my eating habits and to break this obsession with eating and I will give You all the praise and glory, in Jesus name I pray, Amen.
